Default Keeping track of your dogs

I am a product design student and I am carrying out a short range
communication project. For the project I decided to focus on dog
walkers as a user group for the project. As a dog owner myself I often
find that when walking my dogs off the lead especially on long walks
in places like the woods or the beach the dogs will tend to run of out
of sight and tend to pay very little attention to any attempt to shout
at it to stay. I was wandering if other dog owners find this to be
the case and if their is a desire for some form of technology to help
people find or keep an eye on their dogs when it has been let off of
it's lead, or any products that are available to do this already with
the exceptions of dog whistles and leads thanks.
