Default Growling and snapping puppy

I have an 11 week old chihuahua. He's the sweetest little guy ever.
However, today he had a piece of paper in his mouth and I picked him
up to take it out of his mouth...boy, was he ever mad!!! He started
growling and snapping at my fingers. I said NO in a very firm, loud
voice and put him down. I'm not sure how to handle this behavior. I
guess I would be mad if someone tried to put their hands in my mouth
to yank something out that I was eating...on the other hand, I can't
let him eat/chew on any and everything he finds. We are trying really
hard to puppy proof the house and try to pick up everything we see
that could be a potential hazard. I'm just a little concerned about
this behavior. What is the best way to handle this? Any help would be
appreciated.

Hello MG,

this video is about teaching puppies
the difference between your hands and
objects they are chewing on.

My trainer once told me.
If it is NOT important do NOT take it away.
If it is important to dangerous then trade...i.e....call the dog...then have
someone pick it up.
Dogs are pack animals ....If he wins something and you take it from him
....you are setting him up.
Then one day it just might be a child who gets bitten.
You answered your own Question when you said...

guess I would be mad if someone tried to put their hands in my mouth
to yank something out that I was eating

If it is NOT important ignore it...before you get trouble.
He is a very small dog.....imagine if it was a German Shepherd.:-(
My friend has a Chihuahua....they are very quick and very nice dogs.
They move like whippets....she has now had 4 all very nice dogs.

It's not up to the dog to decide what's important or not. Anything the dog
picks up should be freely handed over when the owner asks.
