Default Help! Heartworm, Flea and Worm preventatives?

I have 2 dogs that are on Sentinel 51-100lbs Flavor Tabs. I have a
male American Bulldog named Sully who is almost 100lbs and a female
Rottweiler named Corey who is 103lbs and they were both born on March
18, 2003 and are 18 months old.

What should I give my 103lb Rotty b/c she is over 100lbs, and I can't
seem to find any preventatives for dogs over 100lbs?

Is Sentinel a good preventative against Heartworm, Fleas and other
worms?

We are located in East Rochester, NY. I bring my pupz to the park a
lot and there are many other animals there like dogs and horses.
There are also a lot of cats and dogs in my neighborhood. They are
always kept up to date w/ all their shots. I just want to make sure I
am giving them the correct medz to protect them.

You can see my pupz website at http://SullyAndCorey.tripod.com

I can only tell you what we recommend at our practice. We give our clients
the choice of HeartGuard tabs given once monthly by the owner at home, or
ProHeart-6 - a 6 month time release med given by injection once every 6
months by the vet.

As for fleas and tics we sell Advantage, Frontline and Advantix. Which
product depends on the pet's needs and the preference of the owner.

As long as clients are compliant with the flea and tic and heartworm
products, prevention should be successful (although never 100%.... but
close!).

There are opinions that vary widely on these products. Read up and talk to
your vet. The one thing we do not recommend is the OTC flea products. Good
luck in Ra-cha-cha!

Milbemycin prevents heartworm in dogs at a dose of .05 mg/lb. (See
http://www.fda.gov/cvm/efoi/section2/140915s060498.html) That means your
103 lb. dog would need about 5.15 mg. Since Interceptor Green contains
5.75 mg of the drug, you should be able to easily prevent heartworm in
your big Rottie.

As for fleas and worms, in my house we treat for these things as they
occur instead of giving pesticides on a regular basis. The decision
between taking that approach and being proactive is one you will have to
make with your vet. In which case you can ask him or her what meds to
use should the need arise.

As Hillary commented, isn't your vet the best one to be talking to this
subject? That being said, you definitely need to supplement heartworm
prevention when the dogs go over 100#. My understanding with Sentinel is
that you kind of max out on the program dose at 100#, so you should
supplement the one over 100# with Interceptor. Basically you just add the
pounds together, so for a dog between 101-110#, you give the 51-100# plus
the 0-10# size.

Depends on where you are and what your exposure is fleas. Sentinel is
good for heartworms and other intestinal worms, but it doesn't kill adult
fleas, just sterilizes them. If you take your dogs out a lot, and live in
an area where you see fleas and ticks, I'd think you'd be better off with a
product like Frontline to control fleas and ticks. Then you'd just use
Interceptor or Heartgard or whatever for the heartworm and intestinal worm
component.

Try "Interceptor". Your Vet has it.
