We just got a female cavalier spaniel one week ago and of course started
housebreaking it immediately when we got home with her. We are using the crate and since I do not work--well not outside of home anyways--lol I follow her constantly. Taking her out about every 45 mins or so and of course there's been a few accidents in the house and I just say no outside and then take her out. I don't believe in the rubbing the nose or screaming etc. Didn't do that with my kids so why should a dog tolerate it? Anyways, she is 12 weeks old. How long does it usually take before they go to the door etc and you can really trust them? She's actually doing pretty good as when I do take her out she usually goes within a minute. My 2 shih tzus I talked to the sun, moon, leaves, twigs etc for sometimes forever it seemed like praying they would go--lol. Another question put her on the leash and of course she froze up and so I drag her around. Any recommendations on how to get them to walk. Tried taking a rope out there so she might possibly follow. Took my shih tzu hoping she would follow him but she knows that blasted leash is on her--lol. Thanks, Linda |

Taking her out as often as you can, and watching for signs (they become more apparent the longer you have the dog) is the best method. Have to keep your eyes on her just about all the time. Anyways, she is 12 weeks old. How long does it usually take before they go to the door etc and you can really trust them? Some dogs never go to the door. They just wait for you to take them out. Dont' forget to appplaud, cheer and give her a treat, every time she goes outside. Another question put her on the leash and of course she froze up and so I drag her around. Everytime she woke up, ate, played, or sniffed, we took her outside to her potty area. I slept near her crate and made sure she got to relieve herself at least every 2 hours 24/7 (1 hour per month of age). We also hung a bell on the back door and rang it to show her that makes the door open. She immediately picked up on that and rings the bell whenever she needs to go out. We put her on a leash and take her to her potty area. Then we bring her back inside whether she goes or not. If we go outside to play, we don't use the leash, but we don't mix that with potty time. So far, we've only had one or two "false alarms" where she rings the bell but doesn't do her business. It's really cute to watch her go up to the door and reach her nose up to the bell and ring it. She then dances around until we get there and then sits while we attach the leash. She sure has made dog lovers out of us. Just remember, if the bell rings, she gets on a leash and taken to the potty area, even if the ringing is an accident. Good Luck. Don |
