Hello,
We own a 7 year old "Heinz 57" who is very healthy and weighs about 60 lbs. We just discovered a growth under the skin on her ribcage just behind the front leg. It is "soft" and about the size of a small marble or an almond. It kind of moves under the skin; rolls if you will. The dog doesn't seem affected when pressure is applied to the growth. Is this a benign cyst perhaps? Or should it be checked immediately by a vet? I am leaning towards monitoring it for enlargement at this point. A Concerned Dog Lover, Ed |

Do you know if your dog was ever microchipped? I know of chip migrations that have travelled far and move around but they tend to give more of the impression of a bb under the skin. -- Tara |

When I found a similar lump on my dog, I took her to the vet and had it
checked.... I figured it was nothing too serious, but then if it had been......... The vet felt it, moved it around and told me that she was not at all concerned by it. She figured it was just a fatty cyst that dogs sometimes get as they get older. That one never amounted to anything. Best to have it checked just to be safe... especially if it changes in any way. I'd definitely get it checked out. It sounds like a fatty deposit to
me, especially if you can move it. My dog has several, including one that had to be surgically removed as its position (under the arm) caused it to become irritated and bleed. The vet thought it was just another fatty lump, but stuck a needle in it and pulled out some fluid to double-check - she could tell just from looking at it that it was fatty. Definitely worth getting it checked out just for your own peace of mind. If it's just fatty not worth getting it removed as it's purely cosmetic, unless it's in a place that's really affecting the way the dog moves (my mother's dog has one in her 'armpit' and it makes her hold her leg out at an angle, so that one's coming out.) cheers Rachel (New Zealand) |
