Default Switching dog food

I have a miniature schnauzer/shi-tzu mix that is getting to the bottom of
his puppy food bag. At a little over 1 year old, I am looking towards
getting a new food. I am currently on IAMS Lamb meal and Rice.

He seems a bit skinny to me. I can feel his spine and the top of
his hips pretty easily, so something to help put some weight (1-2 lbs) on
would be nice. At the same time, when we go to the park to play with his
mom, they run around *a lot* pretty much at top speed, so it needs to be
able to give him lots o'energy as well.

He also tends to have bm every time I take him out (once in the AM, once
at 6PM, and again at about 10:30-11PM), I wouldn't mind something with
less extras so that this frequency diminishes a bit. I can't help but
feel that the reason he is kinda skinny is 'cause his food has fillers in
it. I don't know enough about dog food to tell what is good and what is
filler, so I don't know how much filler IAMS has as compared to other
foods.

If you want to appear knowledgeable when you're calling someone else stupid,
try including some information in your post.

Oh, Look! Jokerpit is trying to play "Good Troll--Bad Troll." LOL!

Anyone who would say, "Feeding a dog is kindergarden level dog knowledge," is
ignorant and dangerous.

I'm not an authority on food or little dogs. However, it does sound like your
dog is under weight. Fat comes from excess calories, which your dog doesn't
seem to be getting {which is usually a big plus!}. It takes protein to build
muscle, and it sounds like your dog's food might be a little low on that, too.

Has your dog been eating the recommended amount of the IAMS Lamb meal and Rice
for its size? If so, and the food provides the needed nutrients, it's logical
that your dog is not absorbing those nutrients as well as it should.

My two Chow Chows eat PetSmart's Premium Baked, chicken flavored adult
formula. Their stools are well formed and they poop an average of once daily.
I couldn't ask for better results. It costs about one dollar per day, to feed
both dogs.

Is the dog's mother at a suitable weight?

If you have access to alt.med.veterinary, there's usually a vet or two there;
not to mention some more technically inclined folks. As always, your vet is
the best source of help.
