Default Dog is petrified of Thunder Storms

Any time there's the slightest inkly of thunder or lots of wind, or anything like that, our dog
tries to head straight to the basement. Many times she then won't even come back up when it hasn't
been raining for hours.

Is this normal behavior? We've had to gate off the basement as she has now tried to just spend all
her time down there any time she isn't being petted.

Just wondering what anyone else's dog does.

Forgot to add she's a golden retriever and is about 2.5 years old. Probably closer to 2 3/4

And the dog doesn't hear the sounds of the storm in the basement? Do you
have a super sound proof basement?
I cant imagine moving from my house to the basement, sounds like a very
silly response.
My dog is afraid of storms as well, it only came about recently with the
prolonged storms.
He hides under the desk,or goes in his crate.
I just leave him alone, he gets over it and comes out.
Someone making a big deal of it, giving the dog a lot of attention will only
encourage it.

Sure! Basements are fun places!

Why don't you just move down to the basement with your dog? That's
what we did.

That was way back in 1984, and I figure we've saved almost $100,000 in
annual heating and cooling expenses -- or roughly enough to pay for a
new Hummer.

Plus, we don't have to go anywhere when the tornado sirens go off,
we're already there!

It's hard to get pizzas delivered down here, but you can't have
everything, right?

Anyway, the dogs like it!

Ummm - Angie - I think it was SUPPOSED to be a silly response!

And yes, basements are a bit more soundproofed - dirt all around the walls is a
pretty good insulator.

I don't have a basement, but I have a slightly storm-phobic dog. Her preferred
spots are under my feet, under a table or under the bed. we've had a lot of
storms this spring (August weather in May!), so those spots have been well
used.
