Hello
I am currently taking care of a stray MinPin female with diabetes. It is not known if her prior owners were managing her diabetes. She has been with me for about 3 months now and the shots were going fine, and we have bonded very well. She has been getting shots now for almost 5 months total and has been doing well until this week. She has started growling and biting during the shot. I think her neck is sore and she needs a alternative site, but Im not really sure if there are any other good sites for her. She is lean, and has normal body weight so there isnt a lot of SubQ fat available. Our insulin routine has not changed. I draw up her shot, and then I spread some easy cheese from a can on the floor for her to lick up. This takes her about a minute. (I use cheese because it is low in carbs and has minimal impact on her blood sugar, and it just helps to distract her). While she is licking, I give her the injection. I am a RN and have lots of experience giving shots, so the technique isnt the issue. I rotate her site into one of 4 quadrants for each injection, but I still think she is getting a sore neck. The advice Im looking for is if anyone one else with a small dog has had any success with using alternative injection sites for insulin to give the neck area a break. Thank you, Joe |
