Default Melatonin and Fear of Lightning and Thunder

I have searched and found mention of the use of melatonin for dogs who
are afraid of lightning and thunder.

Has anyone used this? Has anyone had any bad side effects using this
on their dogs?

I've tried Rescue Remady and it doesn't work for my dog. I have also
tried music, and those thunderstorm cd's. Neither work. My dog has no
problem with fireworks just thunderstorms. Maybe its the lightning or
the change in pressure. In either case I'd like to try melatonin,
however,I am hoping to find out from someone if there are any bad side
effects.

Thanks for any help

I've used it and haven't experienced bad
side effects (which is not to say that
there aren't any), but have experienced
cases where it did little good. As with many
phobia remedies, if you wait till the phobia
has kicked in, it's pretty much too late.
And some dogs don't seem to respond as well
as others more generally, which is not
particularly surprising...

.........If you've got some time on your hands try searching
rec.pets.dogs.health archive at Google (click on Groups), then fill in info.
There was a discussion about this when the journal article came out on
melatonin and thunderstorms.

You could try putting a T-shirt on your dog. Many dogs find this relaxing
and may help your pup. Costs nothing to try. This is a cheap version of
something called the Anxiety Wrap.
