Default holes

my dogs dig holes. yeah, most dogs do that, it's kind of a dog thing. but
they dig big holes. big enough to lie in. which is exactly what they do.
they dig huge holes, then settle their butts into them, and lie down for a
rest, only their heads and front paws above ground.

today when i approached Manu while he was lying in his hole, he jumped out
and stretched himself *over* it, as though to make sure i didn't take it
away from him.

i was thinking they were doing this to cool off, it has been warm lately (by
pit bull standards), and the dirt is much cooler than the air. any other
ideas?

I'd guess for cooling off. In my old house, Oppie and Dylan liked to
lie under one particular tree, and each one had a body-sized moving
hole. That is, they would dig out one side and cover up the other, so
the holes migrated around in about a 20 sq ft area. Fortunately, they
didn't dig elsewhere in the yard!
