I ordered an Anti-bark electronic dog trainer, Bark Trainer model A171
by Brighter Image. This simply doesnt work as far as I see - there is
little relation between the dog barking and the ultrasonic sound being
emmited.

I've tried various sensitivity settings but none appear to improve it.
I would say it gets triggered every 10th bark or less, and half the
time it gets triggered when the dog is not barking, such as
scratching, or what appears nothing at all. And on occasions when it
has been triggered the dog wonders what the noice is, but then
continues to bark and the ultrasonic sound has little effect.

Not a cheap device, so I was wondering whether others have had any
success with this?

In addition, this one takes three wris****ch-size batteries which only
last little more than 1 month according to the instructions. So it's
not cheap to replace those batteries. I'd of thought a single AAA
battery would of made more sense given that the device isn't exactly
small.

I had success with a Bark Free device. I guess it was the same principle.
But location made a big difference. It didn't stop the dog from barking,
just stopped her barking in THAT location. (a neighbor's dog that barked
right by my bedroom window.)
When I moved here, I set up the device to limit my own dogs barking, this
was a new place and they were on hyper alert and barked at everything. I
used the Bark Free to tone that down. It worked, but took some tweaking, so
that wind and other noises didn't set it off, and I would get that "huh?"
look from the dogs.
I think that the devices are good only in certain ranges...and acoustics can
be a science all its own.
In the right application, I think they can be a good aid. But not a
replacement for diligence in monitoring your dogs' barking.

I'm pretty pleased with the way my no bark is coming along... considering
her breed can be noisy and both her brother and father's owners say that
they bark 'for the joy of it', Cin will stop on verbal request and really
only barks when she has a real reason for it.

My method, first look for the reason.

Dogs, esp. outside dogs in the neighbourhood barking used to set her off but
just an 'uh-oh, no and a shhhhh' in a calm tone with a distraction and
reward has worked wonderfully for this. If Harvey's about (Harvey = evil dog
over the road that bit her badly when she was little) she'll get quite
hysterical so I'll manage her until I can calm her - and try and make light
of the situation, rewarding her for being calm.

If someone's at the door & I haven't heard, I thank her and she gets a
cookie for waiting in her cage. If she's barking for attention, she gets
flatly ignored but I might reward a more favourable means of communication,
such as a sit and wait in front of me, cos at the end of the day - is it
sooo bad to ask for a cuddle or a play when you feel like it?

This is touching the surface. Lots of other things might trigger her barking
and sometimes its harder to guess which it is. Last night for example, she
started barking very loudly and quite furiously. She was on our bed at the
time and I guessed she must have heard a noise outside. When I sat up to
check, she was absolutely fast asleep. I gently tickled and shook her awake
and she went back to sleep again just fine.

I would never like to use a punishment based training method on a barking
dog... I've heard one too many stories of people saved from house fires by
being alerted by their dogs.
