Time for a visit to the vet. It could be an endocrine
problem, it could be a cognitive disorder (doggie
Alzheimers) and it could be nothing. The vet can run some
tests to make sure he's healthy, which is the first step.

I had to shut him out of the house until a bath
was ready.

If he's having cognitive problems you probably want to keep
his alone outside time to a minimum.

and my dog stunk to high heaven as well as looking a complete mess
walking home with lumpy diarroeah dangling off him. I had to shut him
out of the house until a bath was ready. He was stinking and his harness
and lead got covered too. Why has he started doing this?

The first thing to note is that it is normal for dogs to roll in dead
things. Dogs with strong prey instincts (like my border collie and
staffordshire terrier) are especially prone to do so. They do it to mask
their scent. Three of my dogs do it a couple of times each year. The
fourth tries to do it at least once a month (our daily walking route has a
high likelihood of running across a dead squirrel or bird). This
frequently leaves the dog smelling so bad it raises my gag reflex :-(

Having said that it does strike me as odd that your dog is choosing
another dogs excrement. I agree with Melinda. Have your dog checked for a
physical problem. At his age some sort of chemical imbalance or brain
disorder are, sadly, all too likely.

........Any urban foxes in your area? Fox scat is particularly inviting as
perfume for some dogs.

........Could be poop from female dog in heat which made the pile inviting.
