Default Cubbe report: infection

Poor thing. For 2 days now, Cubbe has been asking to go outside more
but then not had much to pee. She's been a little off her feed, but all
my dogs have had a day now and then when they didn't feel like eating so
I didn't think much of that. Today Jim came in from walking Cubbe with
panic in his voice. There was blood in her urine. We got her to the
veterinarian while telling ourselves the sorts of things you tell
yourself: that her energy level is good and that she hasn't seemed
terribly in pain, just a little agitated. Still, the visual of seeing
that bright red blood is dramatic. The vet confirmed that she doesn't
seem to be in bad shape. She probably has a bladder infection. She's
got amoxicillin for it. We should see improvement in a day or a few
days at the least. (And if not, we go back for the big guns.) She said
that dogs sometimes get an infection for no reason and that if the
infection recurs she'll look for a bladder stone or something else that
might be driving the infection.

Cubbe wasn't terrible with the vet this time though we did think it
prudent to put a muzzle on her, and she didn't like that. I can only
hope that she's realizing that terrible things don't happen to her
there. Also, the vet didn't insist on putting Cubbe on the table. She
examined her on the floor. The exam was the quick and simple sort, just
to listen to her heart and do some poking to feel internal organs all of
which were fine.

I'm glad that she seems to be OK. Next time you visit, I think
that you should bring Cubbe.

FWIW, I find bright red blood less scary than darker (probably
digested) blood.

Did your vet suggest giving her cranberry extract pills and/or adding
her frozen blueberries to her food? According to my vet, chemicals in
these help keep the bacteria from clinging to the bladder walls. I'd
heard this about cranberry, but the blueberries were news to me.

The vet didn't say anything about them, but I knew about those
alternative treatments for myself. The cranberry cure had been passed
around word of mouth for the longest time with only anecdotal evidence
that it worked. Then it was tested and discovered that blueberries have
the same compound as do white cranberries which don't taste so sour.
The testing showed what you said, that they help keep bacteria from
taking up residence in the bladder. I buy blueberry juice by the case
when I'm at Trader Joe's for my own consumption. I could put a little
in Cubbe's water.

I can picture it now. My in-laws + Cubbe. That's a scarier thought
than all the darker blood in the world.

I'd take Cubbe while you're in town. That's what I do now, and
I'm starting to make a living. No charge to you or anyone who's
part of the cabal (TINC).

You're boarding? Cool!

Now you're going to have to buy a bigger house, ya know.

(sorry Matt, I didn't mean to send this to your personal email. The learning
curve for Outlook is apparently too much for me these days)

Cubbe is much improved. I called the veterinarian today to say the
amoxicillin was working. This morning I tried putting a little
blueberry juice in her water. She'd have nothing to do with it,
wouldn't even drink after her long walk. I promptly changed it to
fresh, non-blue, water, and it all went down. Fastidious that.
