I am new to these doggy newsgroups and one thing has struck me. Why do
people swear so much?

Because sometimes in this life, there just is no other expression of
frustration and anger that is quite so pithy and compact. Many times
experienced animal people are very patient in answering questions from
inexperienced folks, but occasionally there comes such a nincompoop who
isn't willing to listen to very good advice and to whom one definately wants
to express a Chenyism. Most of us prefer most animals to most people, and
it's the animals who will suffer from their owner's pride of ignorance.
That's beyond frustrating, especially if you work in rescue and see the
results of many people's bad life choices.

Then given the importance of these issues should not the goals of education
and persuasion take precedence over all else? This will never be satisfied
if the effort is impregnated with, or results in, personal animosity.

Also, in a group like this you'd expect the members to contain a rather
larger proportion of kindred spirits than in the general population ie. a
higher percentage of people who, even if they are not doing the right
things, want to do the right things and thus be rather more amenable to
advice unless it is accompanied by a mind-closing personal attack.

A further consideration is that there is inevitably a large mass of lurkers
in any usenet group -- people who could very well have valuable
contributions to make but hold back for fear of ridicule.

Question for you. What's the deal with puppywizard? I see there are
conflicting opinions on the value of his views. I too have kill-filed him
only because it immediately and vastly improved the signal to noise ratio.
I'd be prepared to put up with the noise if I could understand him. Why
doesn't he write in English?

*Some* people just can't be reached, even if you're sugar pie sweet to them.
They don't want to hear something, they're not going to hear it. Period.
Sometimes swearing actually gets their attention. It's the language that
they're used to yelling at the dog anyway. G Why their eyes can't read
what the mouth has uttered, I don't know.

Also, in a group like this you'd expect the members to contain a rather
larger proportion of kindred spirits than in the general population ie. a

It's been rare that I've ever seen a *real* personal attack, except from a
troll. You will get the occasional chihuahua yap yap I'm bigger and meaner
than a Great Dane---behind this computer keyboard anyway. Or you get the
occasional total mental case who you wonder how that disability payment
actually covers internet access. Or you get the clash of two personalities
that wouldn't mesh in real life either.

Most often when you get what is percieved a "negative" rant at someone is
just someone who is tired at the end of a long day of dealing with idiots
and has just logged on to see yet another idiot with no intention of
actually doing the right thing asking stupid questions that should have been
asked *before* an animal was even acquired, much less 6 months down the road
after a negative behavior has already ingrained itself.

People don't do any more research before getting pregnant either, I guess.

A further consideration is that there is inevitably a large mass of

lurkers
in any usenet group -- people who could very well have valuable
contributions to make but hold back for fear of ridicule.

I have yet to see the computer program that would send an attack dog through
the internet to pop out of one's screen to bite the hand that typed any
question or comment, even a rude, insane, or stupid one, much less an
intelligent or thoughtful one. What has anyone got to fear about
interactions on a little box? A damaged ego? Why does anyone care what
total strangers think of them? It's someone with pretty fragile self esteem
issues that would ever be bothered, and frankly, they'd be better off
spending time in counseling than on the internet.

Question for you. What's the deal with puppywizard? I see there are
conflicting opinions on the value of his views. I too have kill-filed him
only because it immediately and vastly improved the signal to noise ratio.

He'd actually have to be able to speak English to write it. That involves
some sort of connection where the synapses do what they're supposed to do.
As you can tell, "that boy just ain't right" and is best killfiled and
avoided alltogether. Some people get fixated on UFO's or bending spoons
with their minds. He's fixated on thinking he's a dog trainer.
Unfortunately, to some of the naive, he somehow manages to be convincing
enough in his lunacy that some have actually listened to him.
