Default Can anyone recommend a good high fiber food for my dog?

Hi, my dog Jake (male Dachshund, 11) went to the doctor about 3 weeks
ago due to anal gland problem. The doctor emptied them and gave him a
weeks worth of antibiotics. After the week was over he was still
leaving stains on the blanket and trying to lick his behind. I asked
the doctor last Monday for another dose of antibiotics and he gave me
another weeks worth.

My Jake finished those this morning and I am worried that he is not
emptying his anal sacs correctly, even though by touch or by sight they
do not seem full. Instead of paying $65 to take him back to the vet,
can anybody recommend a good high-fiber kibble for him? He is
currently eating "Nutra Nuggets" Optimum diet, which is their premium
kibble but I wonder is high in fiber or not? I would guess not.
thanks

I've heard positive results from adding one or more of these
things to your dog's diet:
.. Grape Nuts (yes, the cereal)
.. Pumpkin (a magical form of fiber)
.. Raw whole carrots (they pass in chunks)

I understand why you want to keep away from antibiotics, but
since Jake has a history of anal gland infection, you should
keep in close contact with your vet.

I've heard that green beans are a good fiber additive to a dog's food.
Otherwise, I don't have a recommendation for a high-fiber food, but I do
have a dog with anal gland issues. We've read and been told that anal
glands can sometimes present problems for smaller dogs. Zoot is a 40-lb
mixed breed and we take her to the vet somewhat regularly to get her
anal glands expressed. We know it's time when she sits down quickly or
scoots her butt on the ground - we can't see or feel whether her glands
are full or not.

She was having her glands expressed about once a month, and just to see
if it might be food-related, we've switched her from Eukanuba Lamb and
Rice to Wysong Canine Maintenance, because we seem to recall she had
fewer problems on it in the past. We also massage her butt with a warm
washcloth before we walk her, to hopefully get things loosened up back
there.

FWIW, once you get the infection problem out of the way, it should be
relatively inexpensive to have Jake's glands expressed on a regular
basis. We don't have to see the vet for it - we call in the morning and
can stop by the vet's later that day; a technician does the deed for
right around $10. Well worth it as far as we're concerned.

Oddly, I had a cat that had anal gland issues too. She ended up having
them removed after having several impactions and infections.

Good luck!

If Jake is doing well on his food otherwise, why not add a little steamed
sweet potato to each meal? Maybe a teaspoon or less for a doxie.... A lot
of people recommend pumpkin, but that's only available canned most of the
year. It's quite easy and inexpensive to buy a potato, peel, chop and steam
for 10 to 15 minutes. Refrigerate enough for Jake for several days and
enjoy the rest! You can even cook more each time and freeze some. Vets
here say it substitutes the same as pumpkin. In doubt, check with your vet
first. BTW, if you add too much, Jake will probably get the runs. Just cut
back on the amount until you get it right for him.

Best wishes,
Annette (and little CJ, who eats sweet potato just because she loves it!)

The analyses for Nutra products are he

looks like they are 3% fiber.

Here is a product with no more than 8% fiber:
