My 3 year black lab was just diagnosed with
food allergies. The vet thinks that Nixa is allergic to her Hill's Science Diet chicken based diet. The vet has put her on a novel diet of duck and potato. Nixa will be on this diet for at least 3 months. If Nixa is outbreak free for 3 months, then she will be transitioned off the novel diet onto a lamb and rice based diet. I have taken away all of Nixa's chew bones and treats. Nixa will miss those. And her health is the most important. Does anyone have any experience with a novel diet of duck and potato and then transitioning to a different diet? Any thoughts, advice are greatly appreciated. Renee (Nixa's mom) |

Nixa will miss those. And her health is the most important. Baby carrots are a good treat for dogs. They are sweet and crunchy. Does anyone have any experience with a novel diet of duck and potato and then transitioning to a different diet? Why not go with Hills Z/D. Our dogs have been on it since it came out a few years ago and it has literally saved our one dog's life. Our patients at our clinic who have also gone to Z/D have had nothing but praise for it. Has saved the shots and steroids to treat the derm symptoms by taking the proteins that are allergy producing and hydrolizing them during the manufacture of the food. If you do go on that, for a treat, keep some in a zipper bag and keep it in the freezer. Doggies love a couple frozen nuggets for a treat. -Sharon |

Does anyone have any experience with a novel diet of duck and potato and then transitioning to a different diet? Renee (Nixa's mom) Because I sell my dog treats at markets, I have the opportunity to talk directly with lots of customers about their pups' dietary needs. Have known more than a few on duck and potato food. Don't recall any being transitioned back to lamb and rice after allergies clear. On the other hand, I hear about lots of dogs who've become allergic to lamb and rice food. For treats, with your vet's approval, you may consider occasional bits of fruits and veggies. My little CJ dances and twirls just to get a frozen blueberry or raspberry and thinks she's hit paydirt when I give her a steamed edamame, out of the pod, of course. : ) I know someone who got a list of vet-approved herbs/spices/veggies to add to her dog's dry food, which she grinds, mixes with water and bakes into bone shaped treats. Gives the pup some different tastes. Your vet may want to be strict about Nixa's food program, however, until she's stabilized. Best wishes, Annette stop baking before you reply |

Gosh yes...we've had our fair share of food allergic dogs.
Our Ebony was THE worst. Her only treats were a commercial product of dried Lamb Liver. that is all she could have. I discovered she ws allergic to chicken while I was feeding her a raw diet. I switched her to the beef raw diet and she improved, however she lost alot of weight. I also discovered she was allergic to oatmeal but tolerated Organic brown rice. I was able to get her on Solid gold Millenia and she is still on this today, according to her new owners. According to the Canine Dermatologist I took her to, once you introduce a new food, if they do not react within 3 days, they will be fine. Duck and potato is great as is the Venison and rice that Natural Balance produce. If you are trying to find out what the dog is allergic to, feed no extras...no fruit or veggies. Then introduce one new food at a time. After 3 days if no problems..try something else. Good Luck...it's tough, I know. -- Carol J Cocker Spaniel Rescue of BC www.csrbc.org "R.
