For everyone who was nice enough to response to the post asking if they knew
what was up with my year and a half pup who had something that looked like a wart in her mouth: It was indeed viral papilloma. And there were several warts deeper in her mouth in addition to the big one on her lip I could easily see. Very common in young dogs who spend a lot of time at the dog run - but no fun. The fix looks more unpleasant than it actually was: The vet crushed a few of the larger warts in order to push some of the virus back into her blood stream. The theory is that since my dog's immune system still isn't 100% mature, this treatment is meant to stimulate her immune system to fight this virus. We should know in two weeks how it works out. If the warts aren't gone, we're going to have to remove them surgically. So I hope it works! Now the hard part - we have to keep her away from other dogs - especially the dog run - for two weeks. We're only on day three and already she's miserable! |
