I had one miniature poodle, my beloved Churchill, live with health
problems to be 17, our other, a toy, is 16 1/2. I switched to home cooked 'puppy hot dishes' about 7 years ago, using my own recipes, including lentils, brown rice, parsley, etc, plus whatever good lean meat or fish I wanted to add. There are also good recipes in "Natural Health for Dogs and Cats" by Pitcairn. I make a big batch, then freeze in ice cube trays, then dump the cubes into freezer bags. I also add supplements such as brewers yeast, flax oil, etc, when served. I believe getting them off 'dog food' has helped. Also, for bigger and more active breeds, there are suggestions for the BARF (raw) diet too. I supplemented my dogs' diet with storebought frozen barf food too. Do the high end dog foods like Science Diet and Pro Plan have any substantial effect on canine behavior, either negative or positive, over regular dog foods like Pedigree and Alpo? Is it worth the extra money? My vet keeps telling me to switch to Science Diet, but I suspect that might have something to do with the fact that he sells the stuff. We currently feed Alpo dry, and my dog seems to be thriving. He is a 3 year old Collie.
