Default dominance issue

I think I am losing dominance over my dog. How do I fix this and establish
myself as the dominant one, particulary in cases of him not listening to me.
For example, when I tell him to leave something, he just takes it and runs.
And when I say come, he doesn't listen? Should I chase him? Wait for him
to come to me? Thanks.

Try some O-B-E-D-I-E-N-C-E T-R-A-I-N-I-N-G.

If you don't know what I mean by O-B-E-D-I-E-N-C-E T-R-A-I-N-I-N-G,
enroll yourself and your dog in a good O-B-E-D-I-E-N-C-E
T-R-A-I-N-I-N-G class.

Can't find one?

Ask your vet.

he doesn't need obedience training. and besides, the only place is over 40
minutes away from my house. I am home with him a lot of we work together
great. He is just learning "leave it" and "come". I think the problem
started when I taught him to play "chase" with my two young nephews. I am
hoping he will outgrow this phase if I continue working with him as I have
been for the past two days on this, it just takes time. I was just hoping
for some more at home suggestions.

So he's between 6-9 months old now? First sign of adolescence is usually
the
dog going, "Let's see what happens if I don't do it."

This should take care of it:

Sure he does. If he's not listening to you, he needs training.

He is just learning "leave it" and "come".

That's very, very beginner stuff, you know. He needs obedience
training.

What exactly does that mean?

How do I fix this and establish
myself as the dominant one, particulary in cases of him not listening to me.
For example, when I tell him to leave something, he just takes it and runs.
And when I say come, he doesn't listen? Should I chase him? Wait for him

Does your dog know what 'Leave It' and 'Come' mean? If you haven't
actually taught it, he doesn't. Some basic obedience training will take
care of that.

If he knows the commands, and is blowing you off, you need to work on
remedial work. It is entirely possible that your puppy is turning into
an adolescent, and trying to test the boundaries. NILIF should help.

Leah, how exactly is NILIF supposed to work on a dog that apparently
knows NO COMMANDS?

He knows plenty of commands. I never said he didn't know any, just that he
is learning "leave it" and "come". He knows a lot. He can sit, lay down,
chase, play hide and seek and more.

"He's hungry? No problem, he simply has to sit before his bowl is put
down.

his food dish is down all day.

He wants to play fetch? Great! He has to "down" before you throw
the ball. Want to go for a walk or a ride? He has to sit to get his
lead snapped on and has to sit while the front door is opened."

If he can't "sit" on command, or he can't "down" on command, etc.,
explain to me again how NILIF is supposed to help this young dog.

He can do this.

All this dog needs is some good OBEDIENCE TRAINING.

Period.

Sheesh.

read my posts. he has some training. he is just a puppy and he's learning.
he doesn't know it all yet. he will in due time though. he picks up tricks
very very easily. I worked with him today for about 5 minutes solid on the
command "give toy" where he has to get a toy and bring it to me. He started
doing it inside of 2 minutes. Of course, I will still work on it but he is
quick (for some things).
