Need to hear from someones experience whos had a dog with a ruptured
crutiate ligament. My beagle has been diagnosed with this today and am told that his other hind leg will end up doing the same because he is now using the good leg to compensate for the bad. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thank You ! |

The vet who told you that the other let will rupture is 100% correct.
Once the dog throws the weight off the bad leg the other takes more beating and tearing and ruptures much sooner. The best course is to have this one fixed ASAP. This is a very painful condition that can be corrected and often the dog recovers completely but it has to have immediate attention. If you correct this rupture and get dog back to walking on all fours it will take the strain off the good leg. Eventually the other may need to be repaired but it may not happen for another 3 or 4 years where is you let this go you are lucky if the dog makes it 6 months. I had a lab/husky mix who had this happen to both his legs. He had to have them both repaired and it probably wouldn't have been that way if I had known when he first became lame in the first leg that it should have been correct BEFORE he tore the ligament. Because I didn't get him looked at since I thought it was a sprain it caused much more damage. Celeste "Mona" wrote in message ... My beagle has been diagnosed with this today and am told that his other hind leg will end up doing the same because he is now using the good leg to compensate for the bad. Find a way to afford the surgery if you can. Its painful for the dog and can cause a host of other problems. Having the other ACL go isn't a guarantee but it is a likelihood. The longer you allow your dog to favor the bad knee, making the good knee do the work of both, the higher the likelihood for the other ACL to go. Caught & fixed quickly you can help prevent the need to repair 2 ACLs within years of each other. My Min. Dachshund had her right ACL repaired in Sept. 2003 (she was 9yo) and the left one was still in good shape when she died last month. She recovered well from surgery, had really good pain meds to keep her still & primarily asleep for 5 days, and was able to use the affected knee again in about 4 weeks. If you can, shop around for rates. Depending on where you live and how many vets perform orthopedic surgeries, you may find a vet either more affordable for this procedure or one who is willing to finance you. -- Tara |

It was old injury that went un-noticed until recently. she used to fencefight with one of the neighbor's dogs and hurt it jumping I think. knee joint was/is arthritic and it worsened when the weather started getting colder. she's getting around really well after 5 weeks but still have to keep her quiet and away from other dogs. vet said her good leg looked/felt fine so maybe she lucked out there. |
