Hi, I'm new to the group, I am thinking of getting a puppy and was wondering why when you see an ad for a puppy they say 'crop tails'? Thanks, Dianne It's probably a breed that usually has docked tails, and they are advertising that they docked the tails. Or it could be some crappy breeder of pits who is docking their tails. At any rate, if someone is advertising that they do that, in the US, it's probably not a very good breeder. That's because in some breeds it's just understood that the tails are docked, and not doing it would be unusual. And the wording is improper. You crop ears, dock tails. Another sign that the breeder is not properly educated about the breed, let alone breeding. natalie -- What fresh hell is this? --- Dorothy Parker |

I'm new to the group, I am thinking of getting a puppy and was wondering why when you see an ad for a puppy they say 'crop tails'? Docking refers to cutting of some portion of the tail. The amount removed depends upon the breed. For some a "nub" is left. For others the adult length should be 4 to 6 inches. There are likely other variations. Enitrely removing the tail - i.e. failing to leave even a nub can cause problems. I don't know if there are any breeds that permit that. Cropping refers to removing some portion of the ear, generally so that the ear can stand up. I would be suspicious of a breeder that uses the term "crop" when referring to tails. It suggests they are not very involved with the breed, and they are likely not to be particularly knowledgable about their breed. Thanks,
for all the information on 'cropped tails', I will not be taking any puppy from this breeder.
