I guess that by teaching my dogs *where* in addition to
when, I'm even more of a control freak.

Yeah, but you're not a gurl, so mebbe it's okay for you to
do that.

Thanks! I'll hereby continue to control my dogs.

You should go back to your nails and soap operas.

Was gonna say that Khan and Murphy must be kindred spirits, what with
all that benevolent dictator thing and the bowel movement faking.

Hi diddy

I do. if the dogs drank too much water, and can't wait until morning, I let
them out. I usually take a 3am pee break as well.

My dogs just wake me up if they want something, like to go outside or turn the
light on so they can have a drink etc - my Wuppet was always a bit scared so I
had to hold a torch for her while she went outside on dark nights.

And, yes, I have finally got around to getting a night light so I don't have
to get up if Josie just wants a drink (Max died early this year)

Sometimes a dog is asked to hold it for a couple of hours, sure. Humans
also hold it.

Wuppet always relieved herself before she got into the car. Though I can't
take credit for that as she just did it without being taught or asked. When
travelling she just let me know if she wanted to go to the loo etc. Never any
hassle.

I haven't travelled far with the Maremmas - only 50 ks to the vets once or
twice etc so no issues

But my dogs have no cue as to when they are supposed to go. Mostly they go
and come on an "on Request" basis.

If I asked them to "go", they wouldn't have a clue to what I was talking
about.

When my dogs ask for something I just go throught he list of words they know
and they indicate what it is they want. eg biscuit? Outside? Wee wee (OK I
know that is baby talk but Wuppet was only a pup when I started teaching her,
and I ended up using that word for all the inside dogs) cuddle? dinner? etc.

I think you have the right ideas there diddy

BTW is your name Lillian?

my impression is that he hasn't taken the time or

That is right as I didn't want the (six) Maremmas to bond with me as
they would need to bond with whatever animals they were going to
eventually guard. I do of course have a strong bond with the 'house'
dogs - they are my companions

And yes I live on a (hobby) farm in the 'wilds' of Australia, and as a
responsible pet owner I fenced off 2 acres or so with 6 foot fencing all
round.

Ahh diddy, I only suggested to try free feeding a posters dogs as an
experiment for a limited period to teach a rescued dog that the time of food
shortage is over, and that it no longer has to monopolise the food supply.

Then some control freak got all upset and insisted I was wrong, but gave no
rational explanation as to why, and insisted that rather than try and
understand why the dog is acting the way she was, just prevent her from
guarding the food without dealing with the underlying issues.

And from then on WWIII broke out, but mostly from me taking the mickey out
of the control freaks - I respect considered logical arguement but they
carried on like silly kids who resort to name calling when they have nothing
intelligent or clever to say, so I just keep feeding those trolls and having
fun at their expense.

But, as I said I am tired of them now

My recent experience with my pack of 8 Maremmas was that when food was
seen to be short they guarded and fought - simply ensuring there was
enough food placed so that all could access it stopped the food
fights.

I just entered this thread and am reading this backwards.

I had a friend who free fed her dogs, and they ALL fought. Some dogs are
not self limiting, and every freefed elkhound I have ever seen has been
grossly overweight with medical problems from it.

I've never seen it work in our breed.

A critters eating habits are a critical indicator to their health. When
they are free fed, how do you notice when they are off feed?

Those kind of dogs only come along once.

No sweat, the Lillian I am thinking of is dead. I just asked as she was
always known as (Aunt) 'diddy' and I was wondering if that was a common
nickname for Lillians.
