This is a disgrace. It's an attempt by the racing industry to avoid legitimate responsibility. They are wonderful animals, a little distant, walking rugs as pets, but still DOGS. Down with Kansas cowards in gov't. Girly men.

I'm confused... if greyhounds arent dogs, then what are they? Fish?
Snakes? Baboons? What is the purpose of saying they arent dogs? Does this allow them to leagally abuse these dogs? Yes, I did call them dogs. Some idiots in Kansas can change the laws in Kansas, but they can't change the laws of nature. A greyhound is as much dog as any other breed Alan. |

A greyhound is as much dog as any other breed It seems the purpose is to avoid the hassle of protecting racing Greys. While the NGA, on their website, supports rescue and ex-racers going to pet homes that article quotes them as saying " The National Greyhound Association, based in Abilene, Kan., disagrees. The executive director called the change unnecessary and said greyhounds aren't bred for pets, and therefore, shouldn't fall under pet protection laws." On the face of it, and I have *not* done any cross-referencing, it appears the NGA doesn't want to deal with the heat of having racing Greys protected under pet laws. However, that may be a very inaccurate interpretation. -- Tara |

I agree Alan. Maybe Greyhounds should be classified as politicians, then
they can vote for their own rights. Nah,,, wouldn't work, dogs are too smart to be politicians. wrote in message oups.com... I'm confused... if greyhounds arent dogs, then what are they? Fish? Tara,
You are correct. The NGA wants to be "The fox guarding the henhouse", and Kansas allows it. If the exception weren't in the law, the NGA breeding farms would be inspected by the state. The standards of feed, shelter, and medical treatment would be higher, and the public would know immediately about any abuse. This is NOT what the NGA wants!!! The NGA says that they have the "highest" standards, and that they do suprize inspections on a regular basis. Unfortunately, the results of these inspections are not available to the public....ANY public. The Government of the State of Kansas couldn't even get a hold of them, without a court order. This means that there is no accountability, no records, and no public scrutiny. Kansas has truly left itself open to public outrage with this one. The kennels at the tracks are a different matter....They are supposedly inspected by the Kansas Racing and Gaming Commission. I am still trying to get information on the public accessibility of these documents. I don't hold out much hope, but there may be something worth seeing there. It isn't that greyhounds aren't protected as animals, there are laws that apply "to any animal" on the books in Kansas, but getting the sherriffs and animal control to enforce them is difficult. With so many greys kept as pets in this state, not allowing them protection as pets is really ridiculous. We are trying to change it, but this is the first year that we've been really working on it, and we are still learning some of the ropes of government lobbying on this issue.
