Default Westie Info and Buying dogs in general

Hello There,

I'm looking to get a Westie pup and I was wondering if someone could
give me a little advice. I'm finding it hard to locate a pup locally (I
live in the NOrth East and they don't seem too popular here). I called
the local Westie woman who gave me a number of a breeder a couple of
States away. Unfortunately, this turned into a dead end... I'm willing
to drive some way to collect him/her - but Im still having no luck! The
only places I can find are too far away too drive... I've found some
beautiful pups on numerous websites - but I'm unsure about two things:
how do you differentiate puppy farms from home bred pups (i/e/ can you
be sure their being entirely truthful?), and, secondly, what are ethics
of shipping a pup?

I would appreciate any and all advice!
Thanks,
Reenie

Buying any animal over the internet is asking for problems. I'd suggest you
keep at the local breeders or make arrangements with a reputable breeder in
a nearby state to have a dog shipped. Better yet go to the shelter and
rescue a dog........... Mutts make the best dogs anyway.

Hi Celeste,

Thanks. Up until now I've always rescued dogs from the shelter. As of
now, we've adopted three cats from various ones. I moved to the States
a couple of years ago from the UK and a Westie is a little bit of a
reminder of home! The shelters were my first port of call - but,
selfishly, I know, there were no westies. I'm trying to discern good
breeders from the not so good - and the Internet is a useful tool for
at least locating potential breeders. Also, I'd been thinking of flying
out to where ever I need to go to collect the pup... at least then I
could meet with the breeder, etc.

Thanks,
Reenie

Have you tried local dog clubs? (whether it's agility, show clubs, obedience
etc).
I researched my dog's breeder (weimaraner) by joining a forum, which worked
well for us.

Good luck

Thanks for the advice. I did contact the local Westie breeder/also
rescurer who doesn't, as of now, have any any pups. She put me in touch
with a breeder (who she highly recommended) a few states away.
Unfortunately, that turned into a dead end (they were actually very
rude to me on the phone!!!). I'm having a difficult time knowing where
to look next!!
Reenie
