Default question about dog names- kinda a poll

I am surprised to find a rather large array of dog names in this group. I
was just wondering how everyone goes about picking names for their dogs? I
have one right now, Maui, named well before he was born. I knew I wanted a
beachy or beach/sand related name because of how much I love the beach and
to remind me of all the good memories I have growing up and vacationing at
various beaches. Also, I knew I wanted a sandy colored dog. Though I have
never been to Hawaii or Maui, I fell in love with the name immediately. I
loved the name also because it is unique as far as dogs go. So, anyway, I
thought it would be fun to see how others picked their dogs' (or other pets)
names.

Lola- from the Sarah Vaughn song, "Whatever Lola Wants", because when we
first saw her, we knew we'd never be able to resist her charms.

Manu- he came with the name, and i like the way it sounds.

I named him Captain Jack because I'm a Billy Joel fan. The fact that he is
half Jack Russell Terrier (other half Corgi) was purely coincidental. I
always told myself that if I ever got a male pet (cat or dog) I'd name him
Captain Jack. But since we call him "Jack" for short, most people think I
was very unimaginative.

The name "Rocky" came to me as I was standing on my porch and
looking at the Rocky Mountains.

I adopted Friday on a Friday. Plus, there's the thing with
Robinson Crusoe's "companion", Friday. The day-name came first,
though.

I was going to name my pup Remington and call him Remy for short, but then I
talked to a couple of folks in a row who knew of dogs named Remington. So,
on Saturday morning a Remo Williams movie came on TV and Remo it has been
ever since! His entire name is Remo P. Squirtmire!

Before we had gone looking for a dog, we had looked through a bunch of
websites, looking at GSDs. We found one that had this absolutely
magnificient dog that was named Khan. When we found him, we knew that
he had the looks to carry off a name like that. The secondary reason is
that both of us are big Star Trek fans, and thought it would be cool to
have that name association as well.

As for Pan, I haven't the foggiest notion why she was named that, and it
makes no sense to me. When I tell people, I always say that her name is
short for Panda, 'cause she is a black and white dog. She recalls most
excellently to that name, but I end up calling her Missy (or Gomer) most
of the time. If I had to name her, I think I'd call her Grace. For
Grace Jones, because I think she looks like her.

All the pets in my family have had names beginning with "M" so I knew how my
puppy's name would begin. When we couldn't find a "proper" name we liked,
we started flipping through the dictionary. "Macula" comes from the same
root (latin?) as Emmaculate-which means "...without blemish." Macula
literally means "black spot," which was appropriate since, at 7weeks, Macula
was white with two large black spots (she's since developed more.) Added
bonus--when people comment on the unusual name we can say with a straight
name "oh, no: we just named her Spot." :-)

Hey! I had a dog named Maui once. My mom still appologizes for telling
me that it was a dumb name and hurting my feelings. lol. I liked it!

I usually have to see the dog and try to fit the name with the
look....my husband named Suzy (which I think is boring) and I named
Apple. (Her little head was shaped like and apple)

I had a long haired Chihuahua named Little Bear, because she toted
around one of those little bears that come attached to a rose.

Panda- pretty obvious

Pistol- she was fast!

Popcorn- because I was 4

I usually have a name picked out, but then I see the dog and it just
doesn't fit. Apple was going to be Weezie.....but she didn't look
anything like Louise Jefferson. :-)

Just in case people don't know how "Khan" is pronounced, here's
a dramatization of his recall:

I named my last dog Stone,: strong, beautiful and natural (as in the
slightly wolfish 'natural' look of the GSD).

Pete named Cindy and I really tried hard to veer him away from it, but then
I wanted to try and encourage him to make more of a effort to take part in
her exercise and care so I thought getting him to name her might help.
'Cindy, Incidentally' was his choice cos he's a Rod Stuart fan. It could
have been worse though... I was NOT having 'Maggie' as in Maggie May. The
theory didn't work well either. I can't remember the last time he
volunteered to come out for a walk

I tend to call her Cinners or Cid more often than not though, when its not
'Oih, you little cow'. g
