My 1 year old sheltie wiped out a couple of months ago whe we were
playing ball. She favors her hind leg now and when she runs she sometimes lifts it and runs on 3 legs. It's hard to keep her quiet. I had it checked today by my vet and she said it is a cranial crutiate injury. I had just started agility classes yesterday so that is over for the season. Sometimes she seems better but I guess it will take a long time to heal. Has anybody had experience with this? Lori |

A friend's Border Collie had the same injury and required a few months of very low activity with lots of crate time so he wouldn't further injure himself. -- --Matt. Rocky's a Dog. |

Even with a sore leg it's hard to keep her quiet so I may have to
resort to the kennel since I have put the crate away. The kennel is 6 X 8 feet with a roof to keep the sun off her. It's better than having her in the house crying to go out because she is wired at times. ;-) Lori My sympathies. Your Sheltie may not get a lot of down time in a 6 x 8 run, so it's good that her previously mentioned cranial crutiate injury has been re- evaluated as a sore leg. -- --Matt. Rocky's a Dog. |

Rocky said in rec.pets.dogs.behavior: previously mentioned cranial crutiate injury ^ c Why does Xnews do this? It totally cut my whitespace which pointed out my mispelling of cruciate. -- --Matt. Rocky's a Dog. |

Did the doctor say whether it was a full or partial tear, or just a strain, and what did he recommend for treatment? If torn, it is very very unlikely to heal on its own, and will likely require surgery. If strained, it may heal with crate rest, but that means complete crate rest, leashed potty time, and not allowing her to run free at all, until it is fully healed. Since she is so young, it is definitely in her best interest to get this healed now, either surgically or otherwise, so that she has less risk of developing more debilitating problems later in life. Christy,
Even is this hasn't torn completely as of yet I would have her evaluated by an orthopedic vet. Surgery to tighten up the tissue and prevent it from becoming a full tear may be an option. My Barney had luxating patellas and I wish I had his operated on long before they became loose enough to result in a full ACL tear. If I had known they could have been done sooner he would have not spent the last 5 years of his life on pain medications for arthritis. Good luck with her Celeste "Christy" wrote in message news:sl_le.5560$3u3.1207@trnddc07... "Kayla" wrote in message ... Thanks everybody for the responses to my post. I'm a lot more
informed now and in hindsight I would have done things a lot different. I would have taken her to the vet a lot sooner but I thought she sprained her leg and it would get better. I'm hoping for a complete recovery but time will tell. She did talk about the different options and stressed no physical exercise. I couldn't take it all in at the time so I must have another talk with her this week. Chelsea will walk without a limp on a normal walk but when she runs she will lift her hind leg and getting up from laying she will limp at times. Of course there is no more running now but it's hard to stop her from doing the odd jumping up when she gets excited. Lori |
