Nick, your old guy's response is just his way of showing who's who in your house. Sometimes, though, it's just play, so use your best judgement. eh, think its a bit more than play when he's standing there, after working himself up into the state, with an engorged erect penis. Damn, but you should write for Harlequin. FWIW, I know hundreds of dogs and have seen/noticed/observed plenty of erections when a male (neutered or not) is excited. That excitement is often something non sexual, though every dog is different. I mean, the dogs horny dude. Don't anthropomorphize. Dogs also hump as a frustration release, another amongst other reasons already mentioned. Which is why I wonder if the reason is that there is no male smell from the castrated dog. Interesting theory, but my experience is that smells get attention and lack of smells don't. -- --Matt. Rocky's a Dog. |

I honestly don't know. are you telling me that you really think it's probable that your neutered male to suddenly started smelling like a bitch in heat? if he has, you *really* need to take him to the vet to be checked out, because something is seriously wrong. I'm pretty sure I picked the idea up in a dog book somewhere. well, then, it must be true. I may have got it wrong. However, it does make sense to me that if a dog has testosterone and male hormones etc produced by the testes then perhaps the lack of that male smell could confuse a dog into thinking that the dog isnt male. yes, that's possible. it's even probable. but, that's not the same as suddenly smelling like a bitch in heat. -- shelly http://home.bluemarble.net/~scouvrette http://cat-sidh.blogspot.com/ http://letters-to-esther.blogspot.com/ (updated 4/3/05) |

We have three dogs. Two old *******s, around 10, and the third one the pup, 8 mnths old. He was castrated about 6 weeks ago. The old russle/foxy/terrier cross something or other is entire. Sasha, the bitch is fixed. Anyway, I heard somewhere that if a dogs castrated, he no longer gives off a male smell. So as far as an entire male dog is concerned a castrated dog must be a female as the castrated animal dont smell like a male. Would that account for the old guy with his nuts gettin horny with the pup ? cheers. As has been mentioned, it's more than likely a dominance thing. Your pup is starting to mature so the elder male humps on him as a reminder of where the younger pup is in rank. As a side-note .. Sertoli cell tumors can cause male dogs to give off bitch scent. But a neutered dog has almost no chance of this happening since the tumors are located in the testes .. unless the tumor started and spread before neutering. James Herriot has a cute anecdote about that happening (the tumor that is) in his Dog Stories book. Below, the same link talks about Sertoli tumors too. Another way a male can give off bitch scent is if he's also a hermaphrodite. " Male Pseudohermaphroditism When XY males with testes also develop female internal or external genitalia, this condition is known as male pseudohermaphroditism. This disorder occurs as two distinct types: 1) persistent mullerian duct syndrome and 2) defects in androgen-dependent masculinization. " But apparently only Miniature Schnauzers and Basset Hounds have had that documented as occurring. http://www.labbies.com/reproduction5.htm ~misty -- http://mistymage.com/ groups At mistymage Dot com |

I don t recall suggesting that a castrated male smells like a bitch on heat. What I am suggesting is that perhaps because of a lack of male smell due to removal of the pups nuts that in the absence of a strong male smell that this could indicate to the entire dog that because of a lack of male smell that the pup is effectively female. Because of the lack of a distinctive male smell. |

shelly. I don t recall suggesting that a castrated male smells like a bitch on heat. does your intact male go around humping bitches who are not in season? if, as you suggest, the behavior is due to "horniness," then the only way it makes sense is if your neutered male suddenly smelled like a bitch in hear *or* your intact male gets turned on by bitches who are not in season. i'm not sure which is less likely, but i *am* pretty sure that your basic theory is seriously flawed. What I am suggesting is that perhaps because of a lack of male smell due to removal of the pups nuts that in the absence of a strong male smell that this could indicate to the entire dog that because of a lack of male smell that the pup is effectively female. Because of the lack of a distinctive male smell. that makes no sense. dogs are not stupid. they are sure to recognize that a neutered animal smells differently than an intact animal, but i cannot imagine that they are so dim witted or that their sense of smell is so poor that they mistake a neutered animal for an intact animal of the opposite sex. -- shelly http://home.bluemarble.net/~scouvrette http://cat-sidh.blogspot.com/ http://letters-to-esther.blogspot.com/ (updated 4/3/05) |
