Nearly a year ago there was a discussion on rpdb of vacuum cleaners,
and which ones were best for dog hair. There were a lot of good words said about Dyson, and Hoover got a good mention as well. With this much usage time under your belts, are you still happy with your Dyson (or other brand)? Which model? What do and don't you like? Has anyone tried the new Dyson "ball" model, and if so, is it as easy to use as advertised, with powerful suction? Our Kenmore Progressive almost got attacked with an axe today (by me). I've had it with that piece of ... junk. The hose clogs at the drop of a dog hair and has to be reamed out with a broom handle every time the bag fills up. Or before. And it has power-assisted forward drive ONLY. Which means it requires double the effort to pull it backward! Didn't the engineers ever watch anyone actually _use_ one of these things? So I'm in the market and would appreciate hearing opinions, pro and con, of the vacuums you use. FurPaw -- "Here we go round the prickly pear At five o'clock in the morning." - T. S. I have the basic yellow and gray one. I have no carpet, but red oak, pergo, and some area rugs ranging from cotton to wool hand looped to wool kilims. -- Janet B www.bestfriendsdogobedience.com http://pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/bestfr...bedience/album |

So I'm in the market and would appreciate hearing opinions, pro and con, of the vacuums you use. I'd always had Hoovers with the exception of a Fantom(sp) and another brand that were wind tunnel machines (and total pieces of crap that required constant maintenance). If there's one thing I've learned from canister machines its to avoid the ones with corrugated hoses that run from the vacuum head to the canister. They *clog* badly IME, it shuts the machine down completely & its a total PITA to fix. Please note I'm not referring to the extension hose for cleaning crevises and whatnot. Anyway, I wanted a new vacuum cleaner last year, went with a Hoover, and promptly took it back due to being defective. I chose the Eureka 12amp Boss instead because it was the only other semi-powerful vacuum to pick from at this store. I sincerely love this vacuum. Its powerful, it hasn't clogged once, the canister is easy to remove, dump & replace and it comes with an onboard duster where the vacuum can suck the dust out of the duster when you're done. Its a hell of a machine for a low-end price (by that I mean its not nearly as pricey as Dysons and other very high-end models). The only con I've found is that in bare floor mode the brushes still turn so things tend to get shot across the floor rather than sucked up. On any height carpet its a dream though. -- Tara |

I bought myself a refurbed Phantum Thunder at Big Lots almost 3 years ago
and I wouldn't trade it for the world. This thing has power I was so grossed out the first time I used it and saw what my old vacumn had been leaving behind. My mom bought one after trying mine and my mother in law got one after being here and saw how well this thing worked. In all that time it's only clogged once and that was when Lady pulled the stunt where she shredded a 3 inch think bike parts magazine all over my living room floor. Since I never had to unclog it before I had an awful time doing it because I couldn't remember where to open it up to get to the clog. Once I got it open it was easy to grab the paper ball and yank it out and back to vacumning. I also have a cheapy $60.00 Bissell vac that I picked up at Walmart. It does OK but I still have Mike bring the Phantum up stairs about once a month to use it up here. I make him bring it up because while it has lots of power it's one heavy vac. Our "Quiet Storm" by Samsung has proven to be a real workhorse of a vacuum.
Our household is hell on vacuums with all of these German Shedderds living here! Lea www.shepherdrescue.org |

It clogged and overheated and shut down easily, since I am not as regular a vacuumer as I should be. Gave it to a friend who has someone clean every week. It's been fine. "FurPaw" wrote in message ... Nearly a year ago there was a discussion on rpdb of vacuum cleaners, and which ones were best for dog hair. There were a lot of good words said about Dyson, and Hoover got a good mention as well. I have the higher-end Hoover WindTunnel (the self-propelled one), and am a 2x a week vaccuumer. 2 dogs w/ longish hair--one that sheds in single hairs (Coda), the other that sheds in clumps (Bodhi) and 2 cats (one prickly short hairs--a bitch to get off the couch where she sleeps and one a long, silky haired behemoth). I love the Hoover, with the exception that I do monthly maintenence on it by taking the entire bottom off from it (like when you change a belt) and pulling hair from the beater bar & the undercarriage. And I don't think the upholstery attachment works very well. The dirt canister cleans easily, and I've only changed the filter (at $25-30 bucks a pop) once a year in just over 3 years. I think I paid between $250-300 for it. It replaced a lower-end Hoover WindTunnel that had less horsepower, and I was amazed at the difference in suction. I really have had good luck with the WT's, but it will probably be my last. It's probably got another good 2-3 years on it, when it dies, I will be getting a Dyson, however. Now, I just noticed that our local Wal-Marts and Targets are carrying the basic yellow & grey Dyson for just under $400. It is brand-new to that market, I believe. I don't think that I'll be getting that one, however, I didn't notice any upholstery/stair attachments. Shelly & The Boys |
