....and jets flying overhead, lorries going past house, fireworlks.
Everytime he hears any of these things, he shivers and shakes and pants and appears to be having a kind of panic attack, with rapid panting. He tears around the house trying to find somewhere to hide - and we can't calm him down whatever we do. We rescued him from a shelter, and he is *really* well behaved and well-trained - he just goes to pieces when he hears loud rumbly noises. We are dreading November 5th - can anyone advise any remedy for this? Is it common in this breed? (I didn't think so from experiences of friends) Any advice gratefully received! |

Do you use a house cage? If carefully introduced, it can be an invaluable tool and with a nice dark cover may well be that safe haven he's looking for. You can also try a DAP (dog appeasing pheromone (sp) - a bit like a plug in air freshener but emits 'well being' pheromones for dogs). Some find they work wonders, others find they don't work at all... worth a try. Rescue remedy - I'm cynical about this one, but others swear by it - available from chemists. Skullcap and valerian root capsules is effective in calming stress and making a dog feel more relaxed. Dorwest herbs stock it as I remember. Last by not least, you can get CD's of 'scary noises to gradually desensitise him. I would personally go the crate, dap and s&v capsules along with the CD. Can't rem the supplier but I believe you should be able to find it he www.apbt.co.uk Good luck - I am very lucky. My dog is totally not affected at all, but I am terrified ![]() Diana -- Cindy the weimaraner's web site: http://cindy-incidentally.mysite.wanadoo-members.co.uk |
