I understand. My wife and I were planning to get a second crate - they
are rapidly outgrowing the one we have now.

Get the crate NOW.

Feed them in the crate? Doesn't that get a little messy?

Why would it? They do eat from bowls, right? How would it be any
messier than a bowl on the floor?

I just had a large puppy here for the last 10 days. Because my
pattern is - feed the dogs, then go in the next room to feed the cats
and scoop their box, I couldn't be keeping an eye on the puppy and
where she was wandering to (like the adult dogs' bowls). So, she ate
in her crate. Amazing how fast a puppy can zip into a crate on
command when they know that's where they get fed.
