We just got one.. a 5 year old neutered male. He apparently is what I
call a walking rug ( quite like one of our cats). He sprawls out somewhere, usually where people are. After a while, he gets up and sprawls out somewhere else. Its a busy day for him. We have a fenced in back yare ( we have an in ground pool and I have "saved" him once already that will be safety covered in a week), two cats one quite lethargic and one quite wild, 3 kids ( 8, 9, 17). Any pointers? Is there a mailing list? |

Two of them have gone one before us and the other two are in our home just waiting for us to want to pet them. No kids, all grown and three cats. |

If they see a squirrel or rabbit, Greyhound is GONE forever. They are a little lethargic for my taste. "Walking Rugs" is the best description I have ever heard of them! They lay around as if they were on Thorazine drips. But they are great apartment doggies!! God knows there are plenty that need rescue. It is great to rescue one. Bravo. |

I like big dogs, but don't like hyperactive ones. We have one pretty cool cat who is used to dogs. I have a friend who adopted a greyhound , and had him for several years when he bolted through a screen door and ran off, never to be seen again. How long do greyhounds live? Are adoptable ones usually male or female? |

Howdy dejablues,
I am not a big fan of having sighthounds around cats. You might get lucky and have one that is ok. But then after a few years the situation might be just right and you're down one cat. Greys are not hyperactive. At least the ones I've had and the ones I've been around. But they do enjoy their exercise. You must have a fenced yard. Expect one in good health to be around for at least 10 years and 15 isn't too uncommon. Frank X. Morris http://community.webtv.net/Sulkhalil/SalukiCornerChime |

Alas, never let a Greyhound loose since they do have a habit of seeing things and chasing them. Then they can't find their way back for some reason. -Rich |

Howdy Rich,
The reason a greyhound that has run after something doesn't come back is because it is lost. Especially if it has run out of sight from where it had started. Track dogs have never had to "find" anything. They are led to the track they chase a "rabbit right in front of them and then a human comes and gets them. So what you basicly have is a young child as far as finding their way around. They have never had to put their nose to the ground to sniff their way back home. When they are running after something they aren't looking at landmarks. When they stop their chase and no human comes to get them they wander, sometimes they wander back home sometimes they don't.
