Default Attempting to teach my 10 year dog to get along with others

My 10 year old, male, un-neutered Springer Spaniel has issues with
aggressivness towards other dogs. Sometimes he gets along fine with them,
then other times he wants no part of the other dog and fights with them.

I am watching another dog at my house for the week (male lab / pit-bull
mix). The two dogs will not get along, they attack each other constantly.

I'm not sure what actions I should take when my dog growls at the other one,
or what to do when they start fighting.

Does anyone know if it would be helpful if I have a obedience trainer come
over for a session to observe and tell me what the problem is?

Thanks.

It will be as helpful as the trainer is good, though any
unbiased observation is a really good idea.

Good on you for doing this.

He's 10 years old, a bit too late to teach him to get along with other
dogs. Not all dogs like other dogs, and thats ok. I'd say leave him
alone, keep the visiting dog and him seperated when you aren't there,
and even when you are there if need be. Don't push or force your dog
to interact with the other dog. Let him be in his old age

For future dogs you may get, socialize the heck out of them as pups.
Some breeds are dog aggressive as adults, but that doesn't mean they
can't be taught to control themselves. Socialization is very important
if you want a well mannered pet you can take everywhere

As an owner of a "anti-social" dog I'd have to agree with Jack & Rhonna. I
came to the conslusion early on that no amount of socialization would change
my dog Barneys attitude toward other dogs. He only ever got along with one
other dog in his life and that's how he liked it.

Keep the dogs seperated and I wouldn't take on any more dog sitting for
anyone after this. Let the old guy spend his last years in peace, some dogs
just don't get along with others.

I know of some dogs who might enjoy that job, so it might not be a one
of a kind. There are dogs out there who enjoy being the police of
other dogs who are not following all the rules. You'd have to be
really careful about it, though. I wouldn't sacrifice my dog's peace
of mind for something like this even if there was no physical risk to
the dog.
