"Peter" wrote in message t.cable.rogers.com... Hi, I am looking for a dog who is at most 8-9 pounds fully grown. One of those non-shedding breeds. I would prefer a white coat. A spunky dog with lots of personality who is not too too difficult to house break and most importantly can be left alone for about 8-10 hours per day. I thought about a Maltese but I have heard that they should not be left alone for a long period of time. Can you help me find a suitable breed? Thanks. i think most toy dogs are difficult to housebreak, and shouldn't be left alone for that long during the day due to their small bladders. have you considered a cat? -kelly |

Lone cats will be miserable if left alone that long. Remember, cats are solitary hunters and social animals. Orchid See Orchid's Kitties! -- http://nik.ascendancy.net/bengalpage Want a Purebred Cat? Their 'small bladders' are the perfect size for their small bodies. Toy dogs can hold their water as long as big dogs can. my experience is, of course, extremely limited, and is mainly based on my cousins' Maltese and Bichon (not a toy, i know), and my aunt's Toy Poodle. they have to have someone let the dogs out if they have to be home alone for more than 4-6 hours. they usually just take the dogs with them everywhere they go. it seems like everyone i know with a toy dog has to bring the dog along all the time or litter box train them, or they'll have "accidents" in the house. 10 hours just seems like too long for a dog to hold it (yes, even for big dogs). -kelly |

But rescuing 30 yorkies and giving them opportunity for a new life is very awesome. They are cool little dogs. Yes, they are. A lot of dog in a little package. Debbie Indeed, they are. Gwen |

He holds it often for over 10 hours, especially on Saturdays and Sundays when we sleep in. If I tru to get him to go out before he is ready he backs way away from the door. Gwen |

I thought about a Maltese but I have heard that they should not be left alone for a long period of time. Can you help me find a suitable breed? Thanks. Peter The almost perfect dog for you is a miniature/toy Xoloitzcuintle. They don't shed, and in fact they have no hair! I have never seen a white one though. Xolos are usually brown or black. They do require frequent bathing and moisturizing, however. We bathe ours every three days, it only takes 10 minutes for the whole process. Our Xolo is 12 pounds. We leave him alone in the house for up to 8 hours a day, although we wouldn't go to 10 hours, and he never pees in the house. It is important to give him a long walk before we leave for the day, though. When we come home he is very happy and likes to play with us, but he is also happy just taking naps during the day. American Hairless Terriers also have no hair and do come in white, but since they have a terrier personality and like to dig I don't think they would have the same complacency as the Xolo when it comes to being left alone for long periods of time. I would also suggest getting an adult dog from a reputable breeder, whichever dog you decide on... or else get an adult rescue whose personality and habits are already known in detail. That way you will have a great chance to get a dog that is already trained, self-confident and will adapt well to his new home. |

If I tru to get him to go out before he is ready he backs way away from the door. Usually most dogs don't have a problem with holding it overnight, but I can see how some dogs have problems holding it during the day, especially if they are't used to holding it. There is always someone at home in my house, and at one point the dogs were going out every few hours and got into the habit of that (we recently moved, they were taken out more often until they got used to the new place, got used to going out more often) and we were tired of it, so we finally said nope, you have to get used to not going out as often. So, now, they go out first thing in the morning, and then they don't ask to go out until later in the afternoon. If they for some reason ask to go out earlier, of course they are let out, but just for a quick pee break (play times are seperate for us). It was just really frustrating taking 3 dogs out every 2 hours and none of the dogs were the same schedule as the other, so it ended up one dog needing to go out just about every hour or so. When they got used to holding it again, they were fine, from the 15 year old to the 1 year old (at the time, he was 1) natalie -- What fresh hell is this? --- Dorothy Parker |
