Default Anyone got a 3 legged dog?

Hi

Our pup is 8 months. She is a sort of jack russel/staffordshire bull terrier
cross probably with loads of other stuff mixed in.

At 5 months she was hit by a car, her back left leg was shattered. They put
4 metal pins in to hold it together and it has now more or less healed as
well as it's going to.

Unfortunately she still limps badly, and rarely puts full weight on the leg.
Some good days and she will walk normally, on bad days she just cries.

Next week she goes in to get a pin removed which may have slipped. This is
the last chance to save the leg, if they see during the op that the bone's
not healed they will just remove the leg below the knee.

Anyone got a 3 legged dog and how well do they adapt to having three legs?
Is their quality of life much less than a 4 legged dog?

Thanks!

I don't have a 3 legged dog, but I've seen plenty of active
ones, especially when it involved a rear leg removal like your
pup's.

Good luck!

I echo Rocky's post. I've met two and knew one in rescue, two Boxers and
one Lab, and all did very well. The Lab had her front leg removed whereas
the Boxers missed rear legs. I've been told that that dogs adapt to the
loss of limb more rapidly than humans expect. None of their self-esteem
lies in the limb so there's no mental anguish. It appears to be nothing
more than a matter of how fast they get used to hobbling.

I have a 3 legged cat who adapted well to amputation after a large tumor in
the bone was found. If it can't be saved I would go for the amputation.
You'll be amazed how well she does.

.........hoping for the best for you, but take a look at the entry concerning
Christie's exprience with a dog recovering from having a leg removed due to
cancer at: www.doggedblog.com
............scroll down to 3 legged dog blogging.

..........most people say that after they adjust, no one even notices they
have 3 legs.

best of luck to you and your pup

Do you know how old Raven is?

Murphy's osteosarcoma was also in a rear leg, but because of her
age and CHD, I didn't opt for amputation.

Whoops, wrong - she's 6. Here's the whole saga - she almost died a couple
of times due to drug reaction and aspiration pneumonia:
