Default breed of dog considered the worst barking problem?

I wd like the Reader's opinions and/or an authoritative source on the
question. I know lots of people who consider tiny "yip! yip!" dogs like
poodles to be the biggest nuisance; however, there's a lot to be said
for 150-lb "WOOF! WOOF!" guard dogs left alone and untrained.

Ultimately, I know, there are - as Babs Woodhouse said - no "bad" dogs,
just lousy owners. (I'm paraphrasing there.)

Still, the Q: worst barkers? Anyone?

In my experience, Beagles, and shelties

A lot of the shelties are big barkers, but so are some of the terriers,
J/PRT and Fox for a couple. I have a friend with a Border Terrier who
drives us all wild. He has a piercing, shrieking bark, and he has no
rhythm. So he'll be totally silent for 2-3 minutes, then shriek a bark,
causing all of us to leap about a foot, then shut up again. I love the
dog but I want to murder him sometimes.

So it's not just quantity of barking but the piercing quality that gets
to me. A big dog with a deep, rumbling bark isn't as hard on my eardrums
as a smaller dog that screams. Oh and some big dogs have high piercing
voices too--one is right behind me at this moment. SHUT UP CALA.

Ack. I lived with a Sheltie. She wasn't as bad as Coda (Collie-x), and
nowhere near
as bad as the dogs next to our set-up last weekend. There was a local
terrier club
hosting a Regional Terrier specialty. Belgians, for the most part, are
relatively quiet
(although I have seen a good many who bark WHILE working), and they kept
looking as if to say, "Excuse me, would someone go tell those little dogs to
SHUT UP!"

What, pray tell, is there to be said for a 150-lb untrained guard dog?

Well, I have a toy poodle and when he really barks (at a noise at night like
a car in our driveway or the door opening) he can sometimes howl at the
perfect, most annoying pitch. Luckily he only does this occasionally and he
is getting better with the command quiet. Our neighbors on the other hand,
raise beagles that live outside without any enclosures so they bark at
everything they hear (which is alot of stuff since it is the country/woods
where we live and something is always around to bark at). Their barks are
definately more annoying that anything I've ever heard come out of a dog,
including my own.

I also have a toy poodle that can rupture your eardrums

Our neighbors have Basset Hounds, and one of them will bark
continuously for 20 minutes straight without taking a breath, I've
never heard a dog bark like him, it's "ruffruffruffruffruffruff" with
no breathers in between ruffs. Luckily he's not a backyard dog or I
would definetly go insane.
