Default follow-up post JRT problems

His fever is still on a roller coaster. Up and down after we immerse him in
a pool for 20 minutes. seems to keep the fever down in 101.5-102.5 for
several hours. We need to do this about every 4-5 hours. He is drinking
some, and has an appetite at his normal feeding times, but is very weak and
unsteady when walking and has about 50 shallow respirations per minute .
Bowel movements still normal too. No blood anywhere we can see.

Still waiting for the Vet to call with test results from yesterday. Should
be anytime. Overall he is at least no worse, maybe a little more stable.
Still has a swollen stomach.

Never any trauma we know of. No abuse, just a lap dog craving attention.

Is there any fluid drink we can give him to give him some energy an
strength?

More info, help appreciated

Don't know if this would help in your situation, but there is a product
called "ReBound" - kind of like doggy pedialite/gatorade. Chicken
flavored - much liked in our house. Good for post surgery, preventing
dehydration, etc. Might ask your vet if this would be something. I
wouldn't add it without approval, though.

Our Vet called and said the prognosis is poor.
He said our dog has low wbc (66) which is down from 2 weeks ago (300)
Also He has slight anemia which is a bit better than the last test.

He said the only thing we can do is keep doing what we are, to keep his
fever down and
try to keep him eating and drinking. He said to up the dose on his
doxicyclene and keep
him on his phenobarbital and potasium bromide. He also suggested tylenol but
with a messed up spleen
and his system obviously trying to clear parasites, I do no know if tylenon
is wise.???
The tests show no babesia, but they believe the problem is parasitic.
He may pull though it but if he gets worse in the next 2 days, the vet
suggested we put him down.

Does anyone have a great way to increase WBC counts? Help appreciated.

Tylenol or Tylenon? I have always heard that Tylenol is not good for
dogs. Maybe I am confused?

Tylenol... my mistake.

I thought dogs should not be given tylenol also, therefore I did not want to
give his system more problems, if that is even possible.
He is making it about 4-6 hours at normal temp or reasonably high fever with
the pool submersions, so we will try to keep that going and pass on the
tylenol. the doxicyclene dose is doubled so hopefully he has enough strength
to get through this.

Decided to give him a couple more days and as long as he keeps improving we
will make him happy for as long as we can. We hope that is a long time! He
seems to be in more "discomfort" than pain so that is a big factor in our
decison. We do not want him to suffer, His suffering now seems limited to
his not being able to jump and run like he usually does. We have to pick him
up as he has no strength to jump to his normal "perches".
This really is a tough thing for us to deal with on a dog under 5 years
old.

Does Anyone have a good way to bring up White Blood Counts? And keep them
up?
we feel if that can be done, he has the best chance.

thanks

Hi there,

I know "Neupogen" is used to bring up white counts in humans and
animals. I asked about it several years ago when my cat had
panleukopenia (became symptomatic a few days after we got her from the
shelter). At that time my vet hadn't heard of it, but has since used
it. I don't know if it would be helpful with what your JRT has. But
it's worth questioning him/her about it I suppose.

Best of luck!

Our beloved "Sport" was put to rest today after taking a sharp turn down. He
would not eat or drink and we even thought he passed on once before we got
him to the vet. He will be early missed. Many tears have been shed since his
passing and many more will continue to fall. He was the BEST!
Sport, We loved you, and know that you were truly one of the family, and we
pray that you Rest In Peace.
