Default North of 60 - Dog Breeds

I understand the Canadian Eskimo Dog is nearly extinct.

This being the case, what dogs are people in Northern Canada keeping as
Pets, Working Dogs and Protectors ?

Perhaps, there is a requirement for a new breed of dog for the
contemporary North of 60 ?!

Not really. It's the territorial dog of Nunavut and I
understand that most of the teams in the Hudson Bay
Challenge last year were Eskimo dogs. I also understand
that a few years ago there were so many dogs in Iqaluit that
it was causing problems. There are a number of breeders in
Canada and the US, and it's not unusual to see them listed
on Sleddog Central (there's a six-dog arctic expedition team
for sale right now:

Good sources of breed information:

Hey Melinda -- I spent some time wandering around the Sleddog Central
site. Very interesting every time I look at it. Could you explain
"Eurohounds" to me? I get that they're houndy, but why Euro?

They originated in Europe. Before they arrived, North
Americans were running more husky-type dogs. I wouldn't
swear to it but I think it was Egil Ellis
(http://www.egilellis.com), a Swede, who first showed up at
North American races with houndy dogs and started dominating
sprint racing. You don't see the hounds much in distance
racing.
