My 10 year old desexed bullterrier - male - has just been diagnosed
with diabetes. I would love to hear from people with similar problem. I have two queries so far. Firstly apart from the neck which my vet suggested, where are other good and painless spots for the twice daily injection. Secondly, I understand complex carbohydrates should be in his diet but am finding it difficult to interest him in much at all at this stage. His sugar is still quite high so his appetite is practically non existant but am praying and trying very hard to stabilise. Any advice gratefully received. Regards Gai |

Regards Gai Check out www.petdiabetes.org - TONS of info My brother's Rottie has been diabetic for 3 or 4 years now - insulin 2X daily. Learn to test at home. From what I have seen, it wil allow you to keep the disease under control better, give you peace of mind and make your dog much more comfortable. They test 2X daily and adjust the insulin levels accordingly. Even the vet school and their vet thought it was unnecessary - but the dog is doing great - and I think that anyone that truly wants to be actively involved in blood sugar level management will tell you it's a necessity. Add some canned pumpkin (NOT PIE FILLING) to his diet for fiber. Good luck. |

Regards Gai[/QUOTE If he has been on the same diet all his life it may be beneficial to keep him on the same one as changing it may upset his balance again and he will be having enough to deal with by just having this condition. If you are very keen on changing his food there are special diet (by Hills and Walthams) which are designed for this but your dose rate which he is set to will more that probably have to be canged if his routine is changed. Injecting twice daily after along time will probably make the skin on the back of his neck thickened after time but it is the easiest place to inject because of the excess skin. But you can inject anywhere as long as yu can get a faily good handful of skin. Good Luck Lyndsey x x |
