Default fever in teacup yorkie

Hello. My name is Jennifer and I live in Miami Beach, FL. I have a 2 1/2
year old yorkie named Elmo. Elmo is a tea cup and weighs in at 3.9lbs. I
have had many health problems with him. It tends to always be the same
issue. At least 4 times during his life he has had to be admitted to
emergency care for what the vets are calling 'acute gastritis'. He vomits
and cannot keep down food. The mystery is, it is accompanied by a high
fever. Usually 104. The vets do blood work that always comes back
normal. The vets rule out any malfunction with his organs. However- they
tell me that the gastritis should not cause a fever and always tell me
that he has caught a bug and put him on clavomox. We always do X-rays and
nothing shows up either. Sometimes he has had a fever for a week. I have
to take him to the vet daily to receive a shot to bring down his fever
during this time. He's so small and I am worried that something is
definitely wrong. This happens too frequently- maybe once every 6-8
months. The last incident was Wednesday. He had a high fever again and
went to the bathroom many times that morning. Usually he will eat even
when sick but this time he would not. I finally got him to eat a small
amount and by the time I got him to the vet- he was vomiting. Blood work
fine, X-rays showing nothing but he did have a high PH in his urine and
also many crystals. He continued to vomit all day while at the vet's
office. He was put on fluids and ended up spending the night in emergency
care on an IV with glucose and reglan injections. The next morning his
fever was 103 and he spent all day at the vet's again but without
vomiting. He is better but so worn out from this incident. I feel so bad
for him. Why is this happening? Can you help me or do you know what
could be causing this? He has been on Eukenuba dry food since he was 5
months old. The vet said this food may be too rich for him- hard to
digest. I have changed to Nutro's dry for sensitive stomachs. Do you
have any suggestions? Any help is appreciated.

Sincerely,

Jennifer Dyer

Gastritis:
http://www.provet.co.uk/Petfacts/hea.../gastritis.htm

...........It really sounds like pancreatitis to me.
Management of Acute Pancreatitis:
http://www.dcavm.org/00oct.htm

..............Dogs can also vomit from kidney disease or intestinal problems
such as IBD.
Digestive problems of dogs:
http://www.vetinfo.com/ddigest.html

This happens too frequently- maybe once every 6-8
months.

...............Anything going on before these episodes? Thunderstorms,
eating something off the floor, weekend visitors, going to a park you
usually don't go to? Think back over the last week and see if anything was
different than usual.

Blood work
fine, X-rays showing nothing but he did have a high PH in his urine and
also many crystals.

.........what kind of crystals? Did they do a complete urinalysis? Was it
a fresh urine sample?
http://courses.vetmed.wsu.edu/vm552/...htm#Urinalysis
*A complete urinalysis should include color, turbidity, odor, specific
gravity, pH, glucose, bilirubin, occult blood, proteinuria, and sediment. *

He has been on Eukenuba dry food since he was 5

...........It might be worth it to try a low fat diet - as if the dog had
pancreatitis. Do you feed any kind of treats or give your dog rawhide
bones? I'd feed nothing but the dog food. It might be time to press your
vets for a diagnosis or find a new vet. Obviously this is an ongoing
problem and not much as been tried to fix the problem - only respond to the
crises your dog continually finds himself in. Get copies of all tests that
were done on your dog and copies of his records if you decide to go to
another vet. Personally I always get copies of all tests done.

You also might post this in alt.med.veterinary.

Wishing you and your pup the best

Dear Jennifer,
I know the feeling when it comes to having an ill dog an not being able to make them any more comfy. I would suggest you find out what Crystals were found in his Urine as urine infections/ bladder trouble can lead to Kidney Damage. I have had bladder problems with my dog for 3 years now and it started with him not being able to walk we thought it was his back but further tests showed it was Struvite and Calcum oxulate crystals. I now feed him on a food call Walthams Urinary food. From what you have described i think you may have 2 conditions runnign side by side. hanging his food may be a good start and eithr a tapioca foor (Waltham Sensitivity Contol) or Walthams Urinary food may benefit him.
Good luck.
Lyndsey
