Hi-
my wife and I are thinking about getting a dog, and are currently considering an Akita. (for all you who warn about training, this will not be a problem). My main issue is that my parents own an Affenpinscher (think like a black cat dog..... best way to describe it). After reading lots of stuff on Usenet about Akitas being dog unfriendly dogs, and bearing in mind, one bite or snap would kill the affenpinscher, do you think we could train our Akita to become friends with the affenpinscher? The affenpinscher is a bitch, seems very well tempered. I've read that akitas are dog hating dogs, but do you think it could get on with an affenpinscher (we're talking a really small one here...)? We'd obviously train the akita as much as possible.... |

Gremlin is a closer description ;- After reading lots of stuff on Usenet about Akitas being dog unfriendly dogs, and bearing in mind, one bite or snap would kill the affenpinscher, do you think we could train our Akita to become friends with the affenpinscher? Train? no. There are variations in any breed. You might improve your chances if get a small male from a responsible breeder who is thoroughly familiar with his/her lines and has lines with lower than normal dog-dog aggression. Or a mature adult with a known history of getting along. Supposedly the males have the most significant dog aggression but bitch fights are horrendous if they occur so I could never recommend two females where dog aggression is a possibility. Michele Welton's advice on this page http://www.yourpurebredpuppy.com/reviews/akitas.html is very accurate. The affenpinscher is a bitch, seems very well tempered. I've read that akitas are dog hating dogs, but do you think it could get on with an affenpinscher (we're talking a really small one here...)? Can't tell. My personal choice would be to choose a breed more likely to work out. We'd obviously train the akita as much as possible.... You really con't count ot training to deal with the issue except when you are present. And even then a moments inattention can result in tragety. It is far safer to both train AND keep the dog separated all the time - or chose a lower risk dog. -- Diane Blackman http://dog-play.com/ http://dogplay.com/Shop/ |

YMMV, of course. -kelly |

Based on the Akitas I know, and on what their breeders and many-decades
owners tell me.... Don't count on a small dog being safe. EVER! The average well-bred Akita will be terrific with kids.... but not other dogs. I emphasize the well-bred part. There are a lot of lousy breeders. Also, check with your homeowner insurance provider. This is one of the breeds on their black-lists. You could loose your policy if you bring in Any Akita. Sad, but that's the way it is. Jo Wolf Martinez, Georgia |
