Default Barking at night for no reason

Our old Chesapeake Bay Retriever mix has been barking indoors at night
for no reason whatsoever. It started last winter when he was acting a
little goofy. He sat in the bathroom doorway (with nobody in the
bathroom) and just stared at us, refusing to leave for a long time. We
thought he was acting a bit strange and that night he would let out
soft growl and then bark. He'd repeat this every few minutes
throughout the night. He wouldn't have his ears pricked or be looking
at anything in particular when he'd do it. He'd just lie there and
pant. Naturally I thought he just had to go outside but he went out
and didn't even have to go.

He's started doing it again now. Barking for absolutely no reason.
He's not growling like he did last year, but he'll just lie there
(awake) letting out a bark or two every few minutes.

My Shar Pei (rest her soul) started doing this, too.

In her case, her vision was getting worse from cataracts, and probably a bit
of senility. When it started getting dark, she couldn't see as well and got
kinda lost. I would put a leash on her at night and lead her to my bed.

I think you should take your dog to the vet.
