Anyone got good suggestions on recall / come when dog is outside ?

I have almost perfect recall indoors and almost non-existent one outdoors.
My dog is not food / treat motivated in the least bit.

I feel like he has nothing to "come" to when he is outside, therefore he
doesn't. And on the other side, I feel he comes to me indoors all the time
because he will get the chance to go outside.

I have a young dog in my daycare who does this. She won't come
in until *she's* damn ready to come in (and does this with her
owner, too). Treats as bribes wear out with many dogs, and
don't work at all with Eenah.

She's a very friendly puppy (5 months old), so I'm using this
against her. While all of the other dogs are inside, and she's
alone doing the apparently important job of exploring the yard,
I'm watching through a window. As soon as her attention shifts
from her stick to her leaf, I'm out the door with a toy--in this
case, a nice squeaky bright and bouncy ball--and calling her
name. If she doesn't doesn't at least notice me, I ignore her
and go back inside to my Peeping Tom position. When she does
come, I Jackpot! with play. Rinse and repeat, vary with "you
can stay out" and "you have to come in."

If she decides to play with me--play bowing, getting ready to
run away, etc.--again I go neutral on her and return inside if I
see she doesn't mean to give up her game any time soon.

Yes, it takes some time, but is worth it in the long run.

No catch 22, just a perfect example of dogs repeat behaviors that are
rewarding to them It is rewarding for your dog to go outside, and
if you call him and he comes, and you let him go out, theres his reason
for coming to you.

You will have to make coming to outside just as rewarding. First rule
is never call him to you and then do something he finds unpleasant,
like going back inside, or clipping his nails, or whatever.

I would suggest you take an obedience class. He will learn to come
with major distractions around.

What are you using as food reward? There are dogs who couldn't care
less about any type of food, but they are in the minority. What have
you tried so far? I use a treat called Botanics Dog Food. Comes in
big log and you can get it at Petsmart. You have to refrigerate it,
but it lasts a very long time, and IME of 11 years teaching classes, I
have found that more dogs like it than not Might be something to
try. And remember, correctly used you don't BRIBE the dog with food
reward, it's a reward for doing the correct behavior.

You might want to find a good e-collar trainer. The focus gained
can be quite impressive.

Aren't there any hiking/biking trails nearby? Maybe the owner can jog
with Max, ride a bike and have him jog, or go for long walks. It will
