Default Is there such a profession as...

....a "Dog Behaviorologist" or "Canine Behaviorologist"?

I was recently at a kennel and the breeder claimed he was a Dog
Behaviorologist.

Is this an actual profession (I've never heard of it before) or is he just
making stuff up?

Hi Jake,

There are several types of canine specialist people out there in the
world;

1. University trained professionals - They are strong in the theory
side of things but weakest on their practical application of behaviour
modification techniques. These people can call themselves Canine
Behaviourists. Many of these people are also Vets and as such tend to
resort to medication at times when simple behaviour correction
techniques would suffice. They are prohibitively expensive. Her ein
Australia they charge in excess of AUD $500/hr.

2. Professional trainers - Those who make their sole living by
training canines, usually for government agencies and are duly
certified by those various government agencies. These people are the
best hands-on experts for solving dog behaviour and training problems.
Many of these go on to the civilian realm and call themselves Canine
Behaviourists. They are usually reasonably priced and will give
guaranteed results that stand the test of time.

3. Amateur Trainers - Therse are people who may have many years of
experience in civilian dog training. (everything from the local
obedience club to Schutzhund Clubs) A small percentage of these people
are quite talented trainers. Sadly a lot of these amateurs give the
other talented amateurs a very bad name. Some of the amateurs in this
field, some with years of experience set themselves up as Canine
Behaviourists. The chances of finding a good reliable one in this area
is slim. They do exist but are hard to find. Many of the backyard
trainers have the gift of the gab and can throw around a few impressive
sounding phrases to fool people into thinking they do know what they
are talking about. The best gauge of the credentials of these people
is their reputation. When it comes to results we have a saying here in
Australia "Results talk, bullshit walks" meaning that many people can
baffle you with bullsh1t but the best judge of a persons ability is the
results they can produce.

4. The Wannabees and the BS artists - These are people whose only
ability is that of having the gift of the gab, here in Australia we
call then 'Bullsh1t artists' or BS artists for short. These people
have no real skills and typically they attempt to raise their own
status by attempting to lower the status of those professionals around
them. This lists own Jerry Howe is one such BS artist. His ability
lays not in any realm of canine behaviour but rather in his ability to
denegrate the professionals that are on this list. Usually Wannabees
(want to be's) raise their status by associating with professionals.
(I hang with the professionals therefore I am like them) but Jerry
puts a new spin on this and vainly attempts to discredit practicing
professionals in the canine field. Newcomers are usually taken in by
his antics initially but a simple read of any of his posts show a
pretty pathetic paranoid and deluded individual.

I was quite shocked when Jerry accused me of dog abuse and various
other things up to and including murder. After recovering from the
initial shock I took the logical approach and asked him to prove his
allegations. In fact I challenged him to do so. When he failed to
comply I near begged him to back up his allegations. That was back in
September and as yet he has failed to do or prove anything. That comes
as no surprise to me as I know none of his allegations had any
substance to them, but new readers to this list may not know the
history of Jerry howe and may actually take him seriously.

A good rule of thumb on this list - Anyone that Jerry Howe attempts to
denegrate is probably a practicing professional in good standing. If
Jerry actually ever endorsed someone (other than himself) then I would
have serious professional concerns about their ability. The old saying
"A man who lays with dogs will get fleas." Anyone who willing endorses
Jerry or his training manual is setting themself apart from the
professionals in the canine field at their own peril.

Feel free to contact me directly on if you want
any more information.

That's a deeply crappy rule of thumb. Jerry denigrates
everybody.
