Default Ping Liisa: Interesting merling on dobe coat

Liisa, these pictures were taken of a supposed Doberman puppy rescued
from an Ohio drug raid. FWIW, he does look like a Doberman puppy of that
age. If not for the color I'd definitely tag him as Dobe. I'd guess if
there's a mix it's Doberman/Pittie, but I don't know merling in pitties
either. Nor do I know of merling in any of the hound breeds that
wouldn't also include a good bit of white--maybe Catahoula, but those
are pretty darn uncommon and not likely to be seen captured from a drug
raid in Ohio.

Blue Dobermans are seen in this country. But I have never seen anything
like this.

Hmm. It really has to be merle and not some weird skin condition or such
stuff. They grey coat areas are so dark, but I've seen very dark merling
just like this in breeds with similar smooth coat, like Dachshund and
Beauceron.

One parent has to be merle, so this can't be a purebred Dobermann pup.
There doesn't seem to be any extra toes on back legs, so it can't be a
Beauceron either (and I don't think that that breed is too common over
there). There are merle Pit Bulls (perhaps actually Catahoula crosses and
not purebred Pits), so color doesn't make that Dobe/Pit cross impossible.

There really isn't even one white hair, but I think that smooth
Collie/Dobermann cross could be still possible.

Agreed. The coat is there, and what's there is shiny. The coat is
somewhat thin overall but that's not unusual for a Doberman blue.

I didn't think of Beauceron. The blue ground on the coat is very typical
blue dobe color.

I'd hope not!

I've never seen one, they are probably no more common than beauceron.

I don't think so, I think the coat would be at least somewhat rougher
and the head much narrower.

She's a he... but I'm not sure they adopt from Ohio to the UK. He is a
cute little bugger though.

Oh, the pup really is both blue and merle! So it is a true blue merle and
not like any Collie or Sheltie "blue merles", which are always just normal
black-based merles. I think I've seen a (true) blue merle before this just
in Border Collies.

Anyway, the blue base color means that this pup is hardly half Beauceron or
Collie, as these breeds don't have dd blue. I don't know about Catahoulas,
but at least Pits have blue too.

There really isn't even one white hair, but I think that smooth

Ok, next try: 3/4 Dobermann and 1/4 Collie (either coat type)?
