Which breed? There are two different breeds of Corgi, the Pembroke and the
Cardigan.

are they good pets?

That depends on the individual dog, and on your definition of "good pet".

easy going?

See above, although I wouldn't call most of the Corgis I know easy going.

barkers?

Yes. And nippers as well; they're cattle-droving dogs.

good tempered?

Varies widely, depending on the individual dog. The ones I know range from
getting along with everyone to snappy and ill-tempered with both dogs and
humans.

I have a Pembroke and she is darling. She's 6 months old and I got her
at 10 weeks. Great pet.
They are smart, bold and sweet. She only barks when she wants to go
outside and then I get 1 bark. And also when there are big dogs and
she is herding them she barks like crazy, it's hilarious.

Nic:

I have a 3 yo Pembroke and I must say he is the smartest, most willing and
friendly dog I have ever had. However, I also work rescue for Pems and
Cardis and many are turned in due to aggression. Corgis are deceivingly
cute, but can be extremely dominant. They require training and
socialization and cannot ever be allowed to get the upper hand. If you are
interested in an adult, contact me privately and I can help hook you up with
a rescue group in your area. Thanks.

I have to say, I agree with Ruth. Lots of horse folks have Pembrokes
and they seem laid back when they've been socialized. But my corgi
(mix) is very dominant with other dogs, very attentive to anything and
everything that moves. But she is so smart and attentive to me that
sometimes I forget she's a dog - I expect her to understand my words
conversationally. She's not a barker. She's perfect with people.

BTW - I have corgi stuff here, if anyone is interested:

thank you all for your replies. we have decided to hold off for now, we are
not sure if a corgi is the best thing for us, we are going to think about it
for a while, don't want to rush into anything

We have a red and white Pembroke. Got her when she was eight weeks old,
she is now eight and a half. I've owned many different purebred dogs,
but (Boots is her name) she is a daily wonder, her expressions, her
playfulness, her comical antics, she is the most wonderful 23 pounds of
joy I could ever want.

The only real drawback that we know of with this breed is the shedding.
You could curry her every other day and the hair keeps coming. My
wife and I don't mind too much, the joy that Boots brings us is well
worth the shedding problem.

Nic, there is an excellent web group for Welsh Corgi owners, both
Pembroke and Cardigan. It's called "Corgi-L" and it's run through Texas
A&M. If you're interested, I'll be glad to provide info for you. I've
been a membe since 2001. I am the happy and proud " mom" of Susie, a
gorgeous little tri-color Pembroke. Corgis are individual in
temperament and personality, but, as with all dogs, if they've been
socialized by breeders, they are wonderful pets and companions. They're
referred to as "large dogs in small dogs' bodies," and yes, they do
bark! And they do nip at your heels as babies, they are herders, after
all. But they can learn not to do that. They are extremely intelligent
-- they'll have the people they own trained in no time. They are
natural clowns and have a wonderful sense of humor.

I urge you to check out Corgi-L -- it's got something like 1300 members
now, I think, from all over the world, and lots of people there are
very knowledgeable about this breed. Or person....or personality
type.....

Good pets, yes. Easy going, one of the best. Barkers, not too bad.
Good tempered -- they are real sweethearts as a rule. If you asked me
to name a good-tempered dog, the first thing I'd say a corgi (or maybe
a collie).
