I'm going to get a puppy in the first six months of next year. Live in
Cairo, lots of strays with litters around. Pretty standard looking
mid-sized mongrels. I like the looks of the dogs, and know a few people
who have had good success with them. Training is going to all be on me
-- most Egyptians hate dogs.

Have owned Jack Russels all my life -- they brought me much joy and i
hope they were happy (last died at 21 18 months ago). However, when i
had them i had enormous fenced yards for throwing balls and exercising
them, and was not particularly dilligent about training. Recall? Well,
when they wanted. Off leash in a public area? Never a good idea. House
trained? Of course.

Now I live in a big (7 room) apartment in the center of the city. The
dog will get walked 5 or so times a day -- and there is a big, informal
dog park not far from where I live (lots of foreigners with dogs) that
we'll get to a few times a week to throw the ball or run. But he will
have to be at least well-enough trained so i can control him when he's
there and off the leash. I'd also like him to be controllable by my
housemate, who will exercise the dog when I'm gone (i travel a bit, but
will clear my calender to be here for the first three months). I will
have a crate at home for training. Will I crate him as an adult? Not
currently my intention.

Would also like advice as to the best housetraining methods -- mine
worked for my terriers, but were pretty old school/uninformed and there
are clearly better ways.

There must be threads that have gone over all of this, best ideas, pros
and cons. But a search is difficult because of the relentless spew of
you-know-who. So if you'd like to help out, post good web sites, urls
to past relevant links, or advice here. Any help much appreciated.
Best
Dan
