So aren't there any safe remedies for Arthritis? I can accept that all
drugs carry a risk of side effects, but cannot accept those which
cause death, however unlikely this might be.

I can't vouch high enough for glucosamine.
It took about a month or maybe a bit more until it took effect on my golden,
Rudy. Ceilidh, (KAY-lee) a lab gal has no ball on the end of her femurs,
both hips. Glucosamine has helped her also.
I know it has worked for them, asI said in another post, don't bother with
the mix containing chondroitin, waste of $$$ Talked to many ppl and ppl with
dogs with arhtritis, and ALL of them, including myself, take the glucosamine
and can swear by it. I've run out a few times for the dogs, and they would
show signs of pain, after exercise. Put them back on the glucosamine and
within a few weeks --- a month they were back to normal.
I take more meds than just that, but I can always feel it if I run out or
forget to take my own glucosamine. See my other post, many ppl, ortho ppl
docs, reg ppl docs, vets and ortho vets have ALL said not to bother with the
chondroitin. I've nver tried it but heard from many friends that it never
made a difference on them.

I usually give them Gluco-C, the vit C is good for them in so many ways, and
we all need it, and I buy mine at Fosters & Smith, catalog, or online. I've
found it without the chondroitin lately at PetSmart.
I've used my own gluco for the dogs, works fine, but they prefer the liver
tabs, and I am more than happy to pay for it. ) You can give them reg
glucosamine capsules if you want to save more $$
I presume I'll maybe have to give them something stronger eventually, but
for the past 5-6 yrs they've done great on this. An occasional buffered
aspirin, best is Ascriptin, (aspirin with Maalox), for the dogs is all I've
needed. Be patient when you start the glucosamine, it can take a month or a
bit more to show any signs of relief.

Of course, as with this advice as any other health matter I would recommend
you talk to your vet about it *first*, as they know your pet/s better than
anyone aside from yourself.
And I've never had nor heard of any side effects.

Oh, my Rudy will be 14 on Valentine's Day, Ceilidh will be 9 in May.
Watching them romp and play at the park, no one would ever be able to tell
they have any problems. Matter of fact, every single night, while feeding
Rudy, he'll follow me with his bowl jumping on his hind legs constantly for
about 20 ft. or so. Very happy no sign of pain.

Hope this helps.

Maybe glucosamine is helpful in some cases as this article indicates.
http://www.quackwatch.org/01Quackery...ucosamine.html

Quackwatch is a good place to start when you find out about a new
supplement.

While they do not deal with animals in general usually most studies - if the
are done - deal initially with animals.

Supplements don't have to be rigorously tested, and don't have near the
quality control that other drugs may have.

Oh come now Buglady - that's a bit much isn't it? At least he provides
a factual basis for what he states - which is much more than most of
the things and companies he rails against. Do you have any proof that
he didn't pass his med exams, or that he even took them?

Oh no, not you too, Buglady??? Are you into smearing people as well?
That's a nice tactic you use....allege something and then challenge
somebody else to prove it.

Such comments are why these drug companies now offer "suppliments".
They make more money from them, don't have to test them near as much and
know that people ignorant of science will buy based on TV ads.

But wait! Order in the next ten minutes and we'll double your supply.
