Maybe glucosamine is helpful in some cases as this article indicates.
Quackwatch is a good place to start when you find out about a new
supplement.

Glucosamine has been available for at least 8 years or so, I've had Rudy on
it for about that long. I wouldn't quite call it a 'new supplement'.

I have also been on it, and for quite awhile too. It has helped with my
right knee. And as for checking on it, an x-ray can hardly tell about
*cartilage*, you need an MRI, (so much for the info posted on that link.)
Which I've had done, before and after the glucosamine. It has helped my
cartilage.

While they do not deal with animals in general usually most studies - if
the are done - deal initially with animals.

Supplements don't have to be rigorously tested, and don't have near the
quality control that other drugs may have.

Which is why my post said:

"Of course, as with this advice as any other health matter I would recommend
you talk to your vet about it *first*, as they know your pet/s better than
anyone aside from yourself.

sure, at a VERY early level, one can NOT see the cartilage on an x-ray, and
I haven't met anyone that can see the joint well enough to tell WITHOUT and
MRI. sheesh

(My references? A teaching ortho at St.Mary's, SF, Ca., another one in
Wichita Ks., another one that does sport ortho, in Oklahoma City, OK [for
the Dallas Cowboys, famous gymnasts, rodeo eejits IMO, race car drivers,
etc.], another world renowned ortho in Ok City, OK, yet another ortho at USC
in L.A., and finally the ortho that does the most, (and yes, best) TKRs in
the country, in Philly.)

Oops, I left out this tidbit from that website, which opened my eyes as to
how much this person really knows:

"The x-ray examinations showed that serious narrowing of the knee-joint
space -- a sign of progression of the disease -- occurred in only half as
many patients taking glucosamine as in those receiving the placebo....."
