Damn scary. Eenah wound her lower jaw around another dog's
collar. Screaming screaming and more screaming. Lupin was not
wearing a quick release collar - my first reaction was to feel
around the circumference for the squeeze latch which was not
there.

I finally had to pick up the smaller dog (Eenah, who is not
really that small anymore) and untwist her. Easier said than
done with all that screaming and trying to keep the other dog
calm.

My dogs don't wear collars inside, and I think that I'm going to
start requiring quick release collars for my daycare dogs.

any other dogs around? that type of screaming can trigger prey drive in
some breeds. i know my dogs would be thinking, "ooh, squeaky toy! must
eat!"

quick release only here. I had 2 scares with 2 other dogs - teeth
caught in hanging tag ring, twisting, both dogs getting VERY upset -
lots of screaming and growling - horrible. Both times, I was very
grateful for quick-release collars. I went to child's elastic belts
instead for awhile. I went back to quick release collars with
subseguent dogs, but no more hanging tags - collar wallets only.

I've seen that happen a couple of times.

Scariest time was when a Great Dane got his jaw twisted in a
Labrador's collar. There was a quick release collar on the Lab, but
it was pulled into the Lab so tight by the Great Dane that we couldn't
unlatch it. The Lab was being slowly suffocated. When the Lab passed
out, she relaxed enough that the owner could undo the collar latch.

I try to carry a serrated knife with me to cut a collar if necessary.

Manu has managed to break or open every quick release or plastic buckle i've
purchased for Lola's collars. i have to use the old metal buckle type now.
though if he got his teeth caught, he'd probably just chew through it.

*sigh*

I've had the quick release buckles release unexpectedly, and
now I have flat buckles or adjustable round collars on all
the dogs. Any collar carries some kind of risk,
unfortunately. I usually have a multitool or a knife
with me.

We were all in my home and I have some very good shears. I hope
that those would have been my next resort if untwisting the
smaller dog hadn't worked.

You're right in being prepared. Thanks for the example.

This collar was wrapped around the lower jaw. In this case no
chewing would have have gotten young Eenah out of this before
one or the other dog panicked.

I've got those shears that they use to cut bandages off - flat on one
side so there's little chance of stabbing or cutting the dog.
