Default Atlanta area: Dog possibly in need of a home (found).

I was going to post this in a rescue newsgroup, but upon going into it, I
found that some child/idiot has filled that board up with nonsense posts...
so maybe if it's ok I'll post it here.

Last week I found a female older (I think older) dog in my neighborhood.
Folks say she's been hanging out for weeks. Left fliers everywhere and the
shelter knows I have her, as well as newspaper ads, etc. Not a single call.
She's smart (can sit and shake), and gets along well with other dogs so long
as it's not a ton of them. A little skittish around thunder and bug
zappers. She's house trained and an indoor dog only. Black with some
white.

Here's a URL to a photo I took of her:

As an absolute last resort I will keep her, but I have two large dogs
already, and a full time job. Three large dogs for one single guy is a bit
much, so I'm entertaining the idea of possibly just giving up on finding her
owners and finding her a good new home. If anyone would like to discuss it
for now, my email address is (remove the
"nospam" part before sending, please)!

The best place(s) to advertise a dog for a new home is in local papers
and shoppers, and see if a local humane society or all-breed rescue will
take the dog or will advertise it on petfinder.com for you. There are
many email lists on Yahoogroups for rescues... These usegroups are
aminly for discussion, rather than placement. But you never know...!

Uh-huh.... That character is a cross to bear.... and he's not a kid....
just a kook. Those of us who are regulars simply kill file so we don't
even see his posts....

What amazes me is how no one seems to be looking for her.

She (once bathed) has a black coat that shines like a race horse. Good
teeth. Can sit, shake hands, and knows a few other simple tricks. Seems as
though considering all this, she was treated very well by former owners, and
they SHOULD be out looking for her.

But I've placed ads in both major Atlanta papers, put up fliers all over the
suburban town where I found here here, and even dropped off photos at all of
the vets in the area, as well as notified the county animal shelter about
her. Between all of those things, you'd think owners of such a nice dog
would be out there and hit at least one of them to get the info.

I may wind up just keeping her rather than find her a new home if I can't
find the owner. I have tried that route years ago (before I owned my own
dogs), when I found a couple of stray dogs, and the number of loonies who
called me was incredible. And to be honest, I'm not keen on turning her
over to one of the rescue groups either. I've personally known a couple of
those folks and I'm not sure I want to subject her to households of 15 dogs
and being outside of a Petsmart until who knows what adopts her. If I can
on my own find a really good loving family that feels right, I'll do it, but
I don't think I'll rely on third-party groups to do it.

Thanks for the info though.

Greg

We were in a similar situation and did all the things you've done. The
owners never claimed our dog, and we ended up keeping her.

Later, in a discussion on one of these newsgroups, it was suggested
that the best chance for reuniting the dog with its owner would be
to actually turn the dog over to the shelter, since descriptions of dogs
don't always click with people looking for dogs. You could then
tell the shelter that after the holding period you would like to take
the dog if the owners don't show up. Honestly, I don't know if
I would have done this (the shelter seems like such a stressful place),
but its something to consider.

Also, did you go to the shelter? do they have a bulliten board where
you could post her picture?

Good luck, and thanks for taking her in!

Mary

Yes, I've got a poster of her at the shelter. I wouldn't leave her there.
On MORE than one occasion, I've heard of local shelters here putting dogs
down when they were supposed to be holding them. I couldn't take the risk
they'd actually hold her until I got back up there after a specified time to
reclaim her.

Am probably going to just keep her.

That's what worried me about leaving Bonnie. Glad you have a poster
up.

Lucky her!
